Statistics of Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer (NI cancer registry) Oesophageal Gastric Annual number of cases (2017) Male 112 Female 77 Median Age of diagnosis (2007- 2013) Male 73 years, Female 77 years 7th most common male cancer, 11th most common female cancer (2013) Staging at diagnosis (2017) majority could not be staged (66%), next most common stage 4 (37%) 5 year survival 1993-1996 15.3% improved in 2007-2011 to 21.1% Annual number of cases (2017) Male 175 Female 51 Median Age of diagnosis (2007- 2013) Male 69 years, Female 74 years 10th most common male cancer, 14th most common female cancer (2013) Staging at diagnosis (2017) majority could not be staged (39%), next most common stage 4 (26%) 5 year survival 1993-1996 8.9% improved in 2007-2011 to 18.6%

Some Risk Factors of Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer Oesophageal Gastric More common in men Risk increases with age less common under 45 Smoking Excessive alcohol consumption Obesity and/or lack of fruit and veg consumption and/or eating excess amount of red/processed meat Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease Barrett s disease Previous cancer treatment Achalasia More common in men Risk increases with age over half of people are 75 or older. Smoking Consumption of salt/ salty foods and/or lack of consumption of sufficient fruit and veg Obesity Infection with helicobacter pylori

Some of the Common Signs and Symptoms of Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer Oesophageal Gastric Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) Unintentional weight loss Nausea and vomiting Loss of appetite Abdominal pain/discomfort Dyspepsia (indigestion) Odynophagia (pain on swallowing) Reduced energy levels Dyspepsia (heartburn and/or indigestion) Loss of appetite Unintentional weight loss Abdominal pain/discomfort Feeling of fullness after only eating small amount Nausea and vomiting (sometimes blood is present) Reduced energy levels

  5. Oesophago-Gastric CNS Role Provide support and information. Advice on symptom management to patients, carers and professionals. Involved from diagnosis and ongoing, including survivorship, palliative care and bereavement follow up. Key worker. Liaise with Primary care professionals. Co-ordinate, refer and signpost. Assist in research projects Audit continuously to improve the service Health and Wellbeing Events along side OG Cancer NI
