  3. Vision MiraCosta s Online Education leverages an increasingly rich array of teaching and learning resources, experiences, and environments. MiraCosta College will lead in providing effective and innovative Online Education as an integral means of equitable access and student success. Mission MiraCosta College embraces student-centered, engaging, and accessible Online Education that meets student needs, enhances the learning experience, and broadens access to superior educational opportunities and support services.

  4. KEY TERMS Distance Education (DE): instruction in which students and instructor are separate, but have regular substantive interaction through technology (Federal) DE Class: A class where over 50% of instructional class time occurs via Distance Education. (state/ACCJC) DE Program: A program where 50% or more of the required classes have been approved for offering as DE classes. (ACCJC)

  5. KEY TERMS 100% Online Class: The entire class may be completed online. (MiraCosta) Hybrid Class: Some instructional time occurs outside of the classroom. May be DE or non-DE. May be entirely online except exams. (MiraCosta) Online Education: an expansive term encompassing technologies, services, resources, programs, classes, and teaching/learning experiences that are mediated at least partially through the Internet.   11. ONLINE ED PLAN OBJECTIVES Establish online education programs within an integrated and comprehensive web-based environment. Enhance support and clarify procedures for faculty involved in online education. Engage students in effective supports for success in online education. Ensure online education at MiraCosta College is in compliance with external regulations.

MORE WORK IN PROGRESS Hiring an instructional designer to provide more support to faculty, especially in the Canvas transition, with OER, and to support accessibility Canvas Transition Team faculty providing leadership and support Creation of minimum guidelines for assigning faculty to teach DE classes Support for enhancing access to programs via DE and/or through OER course materials 12
