  1. Writing to inform and advise Learning objective: Understand how to write a report. Learning outcome: Produce a formal report with detailed content.

  2. What is a Report? Reports are documents that are used for getting and receiving factual information; they are usually presented in writing. The main purpose of any report is to provide the information needed for decisions to be made and actions to be taken. When writing a report you must: Use formal language Use the correct format and structure Keep to the facts Make sure your meaning is clear Use correct spelling, punctuation and grammar

  3. Report questions (20 marks) Read the question carefully, pick it apart! As secretary of your youth club, you have been asked to write a report on the facilities for young children and teenagers in your area. Write what you would say to local councillors. Write a report about your school facilities to School Governors and Head teacher making recommendations for improvement. A serious incident has happened in a science lesson where a girl s hair has caught fire. Write a report to your Head teacher providing details of the incident and recommendations for health and safety. Wirral Council has plans to sell SJP school fields to build 50 homes. The sale of the fields would be used to build a new computer suite but many PE lessons would have to take place in school hall and canteen. Write a report about the proposal above to your Head teacher and Governors. Write a report for the school magazine about a recent school play or a school trip.

  4. When you are faced with a question, pick it apart! As secretary of your youth club, you have been asked to write a report on the facilities for young children and teenagers in your area. A report on facilities for young children and teenagers in your area. Purpose: Inform and advise. Purpose: What are you being asked to write? It doesn t say who it s for. It s a report and they are normally formal, so be formal. Audience: Who are you writing for? The report needs to be informative and provide recommendations so I should try to inform and advise the reader giving detailed factual information. Tone: What tone will your writing have?

  5. STRUCTURE OF A REPORT HEADING INTRODUCTION State who you are/what report s about. Say what questions your report will ask. DATA COLLECTION State what methods you ve used to complete the report. E.g. surveys, questionnaires, interviews FINDINGS Go back to each question and say what you have discovered. RECOMMENDATIONS Say what needs to be done. CONCLUSION Sum up concisely. Try to end strongly.
