3. TECHNIQUES USED IN LINO PRINTMAKING A linocut is a type of relief or block print and bears resemblance to a wood block print. The artist carves into the lino block and what is left of it is inked and printed.

4. TECHNIQUES USED IN LINO PRINTMAKING Start with a sketch on paper or a quick study or two on linoleum. Sketch final design on paper and transfer image onto block using graphite transfer paper or draw directly onto block.

5. TECHNIQUES USED IN LINO PRINTMAKING Use linocut cutting tools or gouges to carve the image out of the lino. Remember what is carved out will not be printed. Always carve away from your hands for safety. Use a bench hook to hold your block in place or a rough surface. Gouges come in different shapes such as V and U and in different sizes depending on the job you have to do. Check your work periodically by rolling a thin layer of ink and printing. This gives an idea of how the carving is coming along and if there are any necessary changes.

6. TECHNIQUES USED IN LINO PRINTMAKING Try not to over ink the block to prevent the ink from flowing into the carved areas of the block. Apply thin layers of ink which makes printing a whole lot easier.

10. TECHNIQUES USED IN LINOCUT PRINTMAKING Rainbow Roll Technique: This is also known as a blended or gradient roll. Load your brayer with two or three colours and roll that onto the linoleum block. Separate by a couple of inches depending on the width of your brayer. Spread the ink up and down with palette knives and then roll out the ink with your brayer slowly. The ink will spread out on the brayer and will meet eventually creating a colour gradient.
