AO2 Technique must be explained in relation to a named
sporting activity
•  Deep breathing to reduce heart rate / to reduce nervous
feeling before hitting a golf ball off the tee (1)
• Mental rehearsal to picture the perfect performance /
feeling of how to kick a conversion in rugby (1)
•  Visualisation to picture an aspect of performance /
focus on how that performance should look prior to facing
a bowler in cricket (1)
• Imagery to imagine oneself in a calm / relaxing place
before attempting a putt in golf (1)
•  Positive self-talk to give yourself positive instructions
allowing you to remain focused on the task / to motivate /
to reassure before taking a penalty in football (1)

AO1 Award one mark for
each of the following
points up to a maximum
of two marks.
•        Deep breathing (1)
•        Mental rehearsal (1)
•        Visualisation (1)
•        Imagery (1)
•        Positive self-talk (1)

Stress management techniques are import to a diver as they allow them to
remove stress and anxiety as well as ensuring the are at optimum level of
arousal.
Mental rehearsal is suited to a diver as it allows them to think about the dive
they are going to perform in their head and play it through before actually
doing it.
It also allows them to imagine the dive performed successfully.
This
could reduce anxiety and stress from the diver and give them more
confidence when performing for real.
However, I think that deep breathing could be better suited to a diver as
when they take deep breaths at the top of the diving board it reduces their
heart rate
,
this will prepare them to dive and remove the stress and anxiety
they may have. It could also help them concentrate more as they will be less
nervous.
This will result in a successful dive which could lead to more points
being awarded.

This content delves into the management of arousal and stress in sports performance, covering topics such as identifying arousal management strategies, stress management techniques, and their effects on performance. It explores how over-arousal can impact sports performance and links it to the Inverted U Theory. Additionally, the content discusses various methods to manage arousal, including deep breathing, mental rehearsal, visualization, and positive self-talk. It also provides insights into the impact of stress management techniques on performance and offers guidance on using techniques like deep breathing and mental rehearsal in specific sporting activities to control arousal.

  1. 4.5 Arousal Part 2 Learning Objectives AO1: Identify how arousal is managed in sport. AO2: Describe stress management techniques. AO3: Explain the effects of this on performance.

  2. Understand what youre reading Understand what you re reading Evaluate the importance of power as a component of fitness for a long jumper. (4 marks) Read the question through once highlight any words or phrases that you think might be important. Write 10 key words you could use within your answer. Draw a 4 box grid highlighting in each box where you could collect a mark in relation to your answer. 1 2 3 4

  3. Describe how over arousal has led to this situation in sport. Challenge Link your answer to the Inverted U Theory

  4. How do we manage arousal to ensure it doesnt affect our performance? Deep Breathing Mental Rehearsal, visualisation and imagery Positive Self Talk Breathing can sometimes become rapid and erratic Taking deep breaths can slow breathing down and return to its normal rhythm. Slower breathing means more oxygen to the brain helping to limit stress and arousal. Mental rehearsal involves rehearsing a successful performance in your mind before doing it for real. Visualisation and imagery involves imagining a positive outcome (winners podium) Takes place just before the skill is attempted. Involved reframing your thoughts, turning each negative one into a positive. Gives them a positive frame of mind and reduces arousal and stress. basketball Visualization Challenge Explain the impact each stress management technique has on performance.

  5. Set out purpose or reasons Name two stress management techniques and explain how they could be used to control arousal in named sporting activities of your choice. _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ (Total 4 marks) HINT 4 Marks = 2 marks naming the techniques + 2 marks explaining
