have the opportunity to apply for our Career
Work-Study Program!

Seminar and determine your top three career
fields.
We will then find you a place to job shadow in one
of those areas to provide exposure to one of your
fields of interest.

work experience! Also, it’s a HUGE resume

Participation Appeals

Students may be deemed ineligible to participate in the
Career Work-Study Summer Program by Upward Bound staff
due to incomplete participation requirements or if the
student seems underprepared for the internship
experience.
Students may appeal this decision by taking the following
actions:
1.
Complete all remaining Career Work-Study requirements
2.
Write a 1 page essay explaining why the requirements
were not met by the deadline
3.
If applicable, provide any documentation in support of
your appeal for extenuating circumstances.

Participation Appeals Cont.

These documents should be submitted to Upward

Students who have completed the appeal process
by submitting the required documents may be
called into the office or contacted by phone for an
appeal meeting.
During this meeting, a final decision will be made
regarding the student’s ability to participate in
the Career Work-Study summer program. If a
student’s appeal is approved, they may participate
in the Career Work-Study summer program. If an
appeal is denied, the decision is irreversible and
the student will not be able to participate in the
Career Work-Study summer program.

Career Work-Study
Placements

In previous years, we have had students complete
their Career Work-Study experience at a variety of
environments around the community. Some of these
placement sites include:

Johnson City Medical
Center (and medical
offices)
Boys and Girls Club of
Johnson City
Law Firms
Various ETSU
departments including
chemistry, biology,
computing, surveying,
etc

Libraries
Gray Fossil Site
Dentist Offices
Veterinary Clinics
Others

Career Work-Study
Placements

Careers must require a college degree in order to
meet our requirements.
Keep in mind: Some placements (music production,
band directing, engineering, pharmacy, law
enforcement, psychology and counseling) may not be
possible because of state regulations, confidentiality
issues and/or irregular hours.
Be flexible about where you are placed.
May not get your first choice or even your second
choice, but you can still gain a lot from the
experience.
Opportunity to observe and learn; may get to do
hands-on

CWS Placement Requirements

You may seek out a placement on your own. Meet
certain criteria.
Your CWS supervisor must hold at least a bachelor’s
degree, and commit to the scheduled time you will
be at your placement site each day (tentatively Mon-
Thu, 1:30-4:30pm)
throughout
 the summer program
(June).
We encourage you to seek out placements if you feel
you have an ideal site in mind. Make sure to get your
potential supervisors name and contact info so that
we can follow up with them and finalize
arrangements. (we handle placement setup at sites
such as Ballad Health and Boys & Girls Club since
they generally have a lot of stipulations)

Student Expectations at CWS
Placements

Treat your placement like a job:
Be at work on time
Communicate and coordinate with your supervisor
Behave professionally
Even if a placement isn’t your top choice, you can
choose to make the most of it. At the very least, it
is excellent experience that can set you apart
from other students your age!
Make UB look good! Placements for future UB students
depend on how well you perform! Also, supervisors are
giving you their time and energy out of the goodness of
their heart.

CWS Transportation

If you can, we recommend you drive yourself
to your CWS placement.
FYI: No, your mom or uncle or brother cannot
drive you each day.
The staff can coordinate bus transportation
for students who don’t drive.
For students who are unable to drive to their
placement, we cannot guarantee an off-
campus site due to transportation limitations.
However, an on-campus placement may be
arranged.

Important Notes

The Career Work study program is completely
optional. If you plan to attend the UB Summer
Program, but do not want to participate in CWS – that
is okay.
Similarly – If you do not plan to take part in the UB
Summer Program, you can still gain valuable insight
and helpful resources by participating in Junior
Seminar at our Monday sessions.
If you pursue the opportunity to participate in CWS,
make sure you are willing to commit to being a part of
the program for the entire summer.
We realize students miss days during the summer
program for a variety of reasons – some unexpected.
However, we hope that you will limit your planned
absences from the summer program which will
directly affect your ability to complete your summer
coursework as well as the hours required at your CWS
placement.

Your Participation in CWS is
up to YOU!

Attend all sessions as much as possible.

Pay attention to requirements and
deadlines.
If you are unable to complete all CWS
requirements by their deadlines, we will
take that as confirmation that you are not
yet ready for the CWS experience. This is
rare, but we hope you understand where
we are coming from.
