Empathic Listening Tips Slow down Put on empathy ears to translate everything Breathe Listen longer before responding (30 seconds is average before interruption) Get present Pay undivided attention Respond with empathy first before anything else, i.e. Connection before correction Self-connect to center and belly to widen capacity

  3. Empathy Blocks Diverting back to self and your own story before fully hearing theirs Shaming Analysis Static/fixed view Comparison Dwelling in future or past Defense Judgment Explaining yourself Blame Correction before empathizing

  4. Empathy blocks, continued. Interrogation (asking for more information right away before empathy) Shoulds ( don t should on anyone...including yourself ) Sympathy (agrees with their judgment. Example: Aww you poor thing that s terrible. ) Unsolicited Advice (this comes from place of fixing or changing as if something is wrong) Assumptions (that are life- alienating) Right/Wrong or Good/Bad Thinking
