Planning for High School and Beyond
High School Choices 2 Almost all students at Three Lakes Middle School are currently scheduled to attend Legacy High School. If you plan on moving to another attendance zone over the summer, we still need to select classes for Legacy, just in case. If you plan on applying for a special program, such as Early College High School, we still need to select classes for Legacy.
3 Early College High School
4 What is it? A special program for serious minded students where they can finish high school and the first two years of college at the same time. Students will not be able to participate in fine arts or sports. Students will have multiple hours of homework every night. Students will not be charged any money for the first two years of college. The application process includes teacher recommendations, an essay, and a personal interview. What to do if your interested? Sign up on one of our interest sheets.
5 Pathways and Endorsements
A guide to the Tyler CTC program. 6 Tyler ISD currently offers 26 career pathways. A student can change their pathway through the end of their sophomore year of high school. Tyler ISD would like every 9thgrader to take a Principles of class. This way, they can determine if they want to change pathways early in their high school career. Many of these pathways end with the student earning a certification that will help them get into college or allow them to enter the work force straight out of high school.

10 Based on the student s choice of career pathway, they will select one principles class from the back of the choice sheet.
11 Core Classes
12 Class Numbers Every student will take have 8 class periods. This can consist of both full year classes, that count as 1 period, and semester classes, that count for period. Every student will have 4 core classes.
Requirements 13 Every freshmen must take English 1, Biology 1, and some form of math and social studies. Students who are currently in math 8, must sign up for Algebra 1 or Algebra 1 PAP (only for those making a high A in math 8) Students who are currently in Algebra 1, must sign up for Geometry or Geometry with Statistics PAP (only if you are making an A or high B in Algebra) Students who are currently in Geometry, must sign up for Algebra 2 or Algebra 2 PAP.
14 All Freshmen who are not in AVID, must sign up for Practical Writing. Prof. Communications is a class they have either already taken or will take this year. They only need to sign up for it in high school if they did not pass. Students who do not pass one or more of their 8thgrade STAAR tests will also be pulled out of elective classes and A picture is worth a thousand words put it tutorial classes for that subject(s).
15 To PAP or Not PAP?
16 Questions to Answer Is the student currently in a PAP class for that subject? If yes, is the student currently making at least an 85 in that PAP class? If they are not currently in a PAP, are they currently making an A in their regular class? Is the student prepared to do summer homework if necessary? Note: There will be summer homework. The student will need to check the school s website over the summer for these assignments. Is the student in AVID? If so, they must take at least 1 PAP Class.
Things to Consider 17 All PAP classes will now be governed by the College Board curriculum. Therefore, many of them will be more challenging than in past years. Note: Students cannot change their schedule out of a PAP class until the end of the first six weeks even if they are failing. Also, that failing grade will travel with them. If a student does not transfer out of a PAP class after the first six weeks, they will not be able to transfer out again until the end of the first semester. At any time that a student wants to transfer out, they will have to show proof that they have been attending tutorials.
18 Physical Education
19 Both high schools would like the students to take their Physical Education class as a 9thgrader. Students who are in band, and plan on staying in band for two years, do not have to take a physical education class. PE students can take regular PE, Foundations of Personal Fitness, PE Outdoor Adventure, ROTC, PE Dance 1, or Cheerleading (must try out and make it) Athletes can choose from the following sports, if they are an experienced player: Boys baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swim, tennis, track Girls basketball, cross country, soccer, golf, softball, swim, tennis, track, volleyball.
20 Important Things to Consider All athletes are required to take Leadership Excellence. Girls who plan on trying out for Red Pride can use Drill Prep 1 (under Fine Arts) for their PE credit. Girls who plan on trying out for Cheerleading should go ahead and check it on their sheet. If they do not make it, we will go back and change it at a later date. Athletics in high school are VERY serious business. Students have to dedicate hours to practice, often before and after school. They also often spend long hours traveling to out of town games. Swim and golf require someone to be able to transport the student to and from the venue. No transportation will be provided.
21 At this point, everyone except for band students should have a total of 8 checks, making up 7 class periods. This means they have room for 1 (or 2 for Band) more class
23 Facts To graduate in the state of Texas, every student must have at least one credit in fine arts. They can take Art 1, Art 1 PAP (need Mr. Kisamore s approval), Theater Arts Appreciation (no acting), Theater Arts, (acting), Technical Theater, Musical Theater, Dance, Drill Prep (for girls planning on trying out for Red Pride), Band, Orchestra, or Choir. If a student is taking AVID, they will need to select AVID at this point.
24 Important Things to Consider Band is a huge commitment in high school. They practice and travel just as much as the athletes. Band has several fees attached. Both Choir and Drill Prep have fees attached. Students can sign up for Dance 1 without needing to try out for Red Pride or Cheer. Students cannot just check AVID. They must either currently be in AVID or have signed up to apply for next year when sign-ups were up in November.
25 Other Classes
26 Important Information Foreign Language only recommended for students who are either very strong in English or are currently in Spanish 1 and plan on taking Spanish 2. If the student is currently in Spanish 1, they do not need to skip a year before Spanish 2, so go ahead and sign up for it. Can a student take other classes on the list? Yes, but it will not help them with meeting their high school requirements.
