  2. Last week Strip off the old self (3:9) Abusive speech immorality

  3. Today Cloth yourselves with the new self (3:12) How do you respond when your equilibrium is upset?

  4. As Gods chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Colossians 3:12

  5. I. Our Standing in Christ 1. We are chosen ones Called by God The gift of God

  6. I. Our Standing in Christ 2. We are holy Gathered to Christ Seen in the light of Christ

  7. I. Our Standing in Christ 3. We are the beloved of God His sons & daughters Desired by God

  8. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:13-14

  9. II. Put on the New Self Five Virtues: i. Compassion ii. Kindness iii. Humility iv. Meekness v. Patience

  10. Powers of today may mockingly refer to these as: i. Sentimentalality ii. Soft touch iii. Low self-esteem iv. Weakness v. Pushover

  11. Work out the Virtues 1. Bear with one another Life is a strain/strenuous Responding with grace in hard times

  12. Work out the Virtues 2. Forgive each other A reflection of the Lord s Prayer Model our lives on Christ

  13. Work out the Virtues 3. Love is the supreme virtue 1 Corinthians 13 Love builds the community up

  14. These ways reflect the social nature of the church A disposition of love Not maintaining factions and divisions

  15. Awkward New Clothes 1. Old clothes/ways feel more comfortable 2. New ways are countercultural not a power-over model rather an attitude of service

  16. Awkward New Clothes 3. At times we feel like giving up being a part of a community is hard work

  17. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.

  18. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:15-17
