  1. Youth Search the Scriptures Lesson 39 CHRIST TEACHES ON FORGIVENESS

  2. Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, until seven times: but, until seventy times seven. Text: Matthew 18:1-35 MEMORY VERSE Matthew 18:22

  3. INTRODUCTION In the previous chapter, Jesus and apostle Paul paid tribute to those in authority. The disciples must have thought Christ would establish His reign here on earth and were thinking of what political authority they would occupy. They wanted to know what it would take to be the greatest in the coming Kingdom. Jesus used this occasion to teach them the paradox of greatness in His kingdom.

  4. How the world demonstrates greatness Greatness in the kingdom way

  5. PRECONDITION OF CONVERSION BEFORE ENTERING THE KINGDOM Matt 18:1-14; Mark 9:33-41; Luke 9:46-50; James 5:19 Conversion is not optional for youths who want to enter and enjoy the benefits of the Kingdom of God. The pre-requisite for greatness in Gods Kingdom is genuine repentance and faith in Christs atoning death It is the genesis of a meaningful relationship between God and any youth. Every sinner must accept Jesus Christ as lord and saviour and repent of all sins. This is the only remedy for sins without which it is impossible to enter heaven To fellowship with God, sins must be confessed and forsaken. Christ s sacrifice must be accepted as the only means of approaching God. Religious activities are no substitute for salvation

  6. PRESCRIPTION OF CHRIST FOR SETTLING OFFENCES IN THE KINGDOM Matt 18:15-20; Lev 19:17; John 8:17, 2 Cor 13:1 Reasons why offences may happen in the church include: Carelessness Misunderstanding Misinterpretation Forgetfulness Lack of maturity Satanic manipulation Differences in background Educational differences Differences in exposure Oversights This command of Christ is the only means of avoiding and preventing disunity, backbiting and grudges among believers Christ gave a vivid illustration and instructions on how to settle misunderstandings among believers It is possible for a believer to offend another believer

  7. PUNISHMENT AND CONDEMNATION OF UNFORGIVENESS IN THE KINGDOM Matt 18:21-35; Luke 17:4; Mark 11:25,26 No Christian youth should ever hold malice against anyone irrespective of whether or not they are believers As God has forgiven all the sins we ever committed because of Christ, we must forgive all offenders Refusal to forgive makes a believer an enemy of God If a believer refuses to forgive others, God will not forgive the sins of such a believer Refusal to forgive hurts the offended even more than the original offence Unforgiveness will lead to sin and backsliding
