  2. Social Development A process which enables human beings to realize their potential, build self-confidence, and lead lives of dignity and fulfillment. It is a process which frees people from the fear of want and exploitation It is a movement away from political, economic, or social oppression.

  3. To enlarge the range of peoples choices Each individual should have the opportunity to participate fully in community decisions and to enjoy human, economic and political freedoms Process of structural societal transformation

  4. Social Policy Social Policy is a deliberate and careful decision that provides guidance for addressing selected public concerns. It is a decision making process that helps to address identified goals, problems and concerns Policy development entails the selection of a destination or desired objective

Social Policy is an instrument applied by the government to regulate and supplement market institutions and social structure It is about redistribution, protection and social justice Social Policy is about bringing people into the centre of policy making by mainstreaming their needs and voices, generating stability and social cohesion

  6. Why Social Policy? Social Contract Poverty Eradication Emphasizes safety nets and the targeting of vulnerable groups An economic and political need for future growth and political stability To maintain citizen support for their governments To promote universal social protection and equity
