JACOB AND ESAU ANDTHEMYSTERYOFGOD SCHOICE Genesis 25:19-34
A LONGTIMEAGOINACOUNTRYFAR, FARAWAY Genesis 12 The Lord had said to Abram, Go from your country, your people and your father s household to the land I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.
FORESHADOWING 23 The Lord said to her, Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger. Is this God s PREDICTION or his ELECTION?
BIRTHRIGHT A matter of RIGHTS and RESPONSIBILITIES By birthright, the firstborn son inherited the leadership of the family and the judicial authority of his father (Easton, 1893) 32 Look, I am about to die, Esau said. What good is the birthright to me? 34b So Esau despised his birthright. Esau showed he was UNWORTHY of the birthright
GODS CHOICE Abel over Cain Isaac over Ishmael Jacob over Esau Joseph over his 10 older brothers David over his 7 older brothers God is the real usurper of EXPECTATIONS So is his choice just arbitrary?
GODS CHOICE 1 HELOOKSATTHE HEART 1 Samuel 16:7b The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. Hebrews 12:16 See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son.
GODS CHOICE 2 SOTHATNOONEMAY BOAST 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things and the things that are not to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. Malachi 1:2a-3 Was not Esau Jacob s brother? declares the Lord. Yet I have loved Jacob, but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.
WHOYOUGONNACALL? Romans 9:10-15 10Rebekah s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac. 11 Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad in order that God s purpose in election might stand: 12 not by works but by him who calls she was told, The older will serve the younger. 13 Just as it is written: Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated. 14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! 15For he says to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.
