The Treachery and Flight of Jacob Youth Search the Scriptures Lesson 18 Lesson 18 Text: Genesis 27:1-46; 28:1-22
Genesis 27:19 Memory Verse And Jacob said unto his Father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me 2
Introduction As we know Isaac prefers his first son, Esau because he always enjoyed meat from the field, which Esau provided to him. ( Genesis 25:28; 27:5 ) This led to great enmity between the two brothers which eventually forced Jacob to flee from his family and hometown. Jacob price for the blessing was having to run in fear of been killed by his brother and could not come back for many years after his mother died. What we can learn from this is that the consequence of sin is always greater than what sinners bargained for. 3
Point 1 THE DAMNABLE EFFECT OF DECEPTION Gen 27:1-20; 2 Sam 13:6-14, 21-33; 2 kings 5:21-27; Proverbs 11:21 Lessons When Jacob said that he is Esau, that was his first lie. The next was when he lied that God brought the meat to him, this time he lied against God as he profaned his name and broke the third commandment (Gen 27:20) The scripture warns that hell is the destiny of all liars, therefore all heaven-bound youths should always tell the truth, no matter the consequences 4
Point 1 THE DAMNABLE EFFECT OF DECEPTION Gen 27:1-20; 2 Sam 13:6-14 Lessons Gen 21:13-16 Godly youths need to know when to say Yes or No . Jacob was negatively influenced by his mother into deception. Deception, craftiness, disguise or falsehood are condemned by God and will attract great punishment. Covetousness and lies are twins' brothers of deception. We have various cases of deception in the scripture: Ammon, deceived his father, David to fulfil his lust on his half-sister. 5
Point 2 THE DESPERATION OF ESAU FOR BLESSING Gen 27:31-46, Hebrew 12:17; 1 Samuel 15: 25-28 Lessons Christian youths should learn from the desperation of Esau for blessing. Esau s problem started when he despised his birthright. No youth should abuse the privileges he has in Christ Jesus. Do not cast away the precious things God has given you (Hosea 8:3). Youths should also not give up on praying, as Esau refused to give up, even when he heard that his brother has taken his blessing (Genesis: 27: 35, 36). 6
Point 2 THE DESPERATION OF ESAU FOR BLESSING Gen 27:31-46, Hebrew 12:17; 1 Samuel 15: 25-28 Lessons Eph 4:30-31: And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice Due to Esau anger toward his brother, he sought to kill Jacob. Anger and hatred are dangerous and sinful. Hatred grieves the Spirit of God and hinder believers prayer. Whatever evil anybody might have done unto us, we should pray for grace to forgive and never to retaliate. 7
Point 3 THE DREAM OF JACOB AT BETHEL Gen 28:1-22; Act 7:2,3; Hosea 12:12 Lessons Gensis 28:7 "And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padanaram Jacob s obedience to his parents during his crisis is commendable. It is an evidence of submission. It opens door to God's revelation and blessing. Obedience brings blessing, 8
Point 3 THE DREAM OF JACOB AT BETHEL Gen 28;1-22; Act 7:2,3; Hosea 12:12 Lessons God promised Jacob these blessings: 1) The land where on thou liest, to thee will I give it and to thy seed. 2) Thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth. 3) Thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and t the south. 4) In thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 5) I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whiter thou goest. 9
Point 3 THE DREAM OF JACOB AT BETHEL Gen 28;1-22; Act 7:2,3; Hosea 12:12 Lessons Jacob s encounter with God was transformative and life-changing. The lord reaffirmed the Abrahamic covenant with him. In this encounter, Jacob re-established his relationship with God and made a vow of allegiance to worship and serve God. Jacob erected a stone of memorial to God, he promised to give the tenth of all that the Lord would give to him( Genesis 28:22). A reminder that believers should honor God with tithes and offering (Malachi 3:10) 10
