Do Now: What is a hero? What is a hero? Create a definition of hero . Make a list of all the traits a hero must have. What makes a hero different from everyone else? Give an example of a hero.
Class Definition of Hero: O Someone who consistently chooses to act for good by sacrificing their life and/or putting themselves in danger to help and/or save others
Heroic Traits: O Brave/courageous O Strong (either mentally, emotionally, or physically) O Integrity O Character O Selfless
Joseph Campbells Hero Archetype: O Joseph Campbell: Joseph Campbell: modern philosopher famous for work on legends and myths O Archetype: Archetype: A character, situation, or symbol that is familiar to people from all cultures because it occurs frequently in literature, myth, religion, or folklore.
Here are some of the traits Campbell says all heroes exhibit: O Unusual circumstances of birth sometimes in danger danger or born into royalty birth; O Leaves family others family or land land and lives with O An event, sometimes traumatic, leads to adventure or quest quest
Here are some of the traits Campbell says all heroes exhibit: O Hero has a special WEAPON use WEAPON only he/she can O O Hero always has SUPERNATURAL O O The Hero must prove himself/herself MANY times while on adventure SUPERNATURAL help MANY O O When the hero DIES, he is rewarded SPIRITUALLY
