The Bible Today
In the Catholic Church in the past, the Bible was mainly associated
with communal worship in churches or used as a teaching tool in
schools and universities. Today, however, the Catholic Church
strongly encourages all Catholics to read the Bible prayerfully and to
give it a central place in their daily life. And so the practice of
ordinary people reading and studying the Bible and sharing the faith
in Bible-study groups has grown.
Those who take the time to read and reflect on the stories and other
passages in the Bible discover that the words and messages in it are
alive, powerful and relevant to their lives today, and that these
words can influence the way people live and act. Most especially, the
Bible reminds us of how much God loves us.

Pope Francis has called the Bible ‘God’s love letter’ to humanity.
He
 says that
we should not rush through it, especially in prayer. God wants to speak to us
through the words in the Bible, but we must have ears to hear.
This means
that
when you sit down to read a passage or story from the Bible,
you should read it slowly, and then re-read it several times to become
familiar with it.
Only when we allow the words to enter into our hearts can we truly
appreciate what God is saying to us through those words.

A time to pray …
Sign of the Cross

Teacher
We will end this lesson by praying the
Prayer on Opening the Bible
 to remind us to
open our minds and hearts to God’s Word whenever we read passages or stories
from Sacred Scripture.

All
Bless us, O God, so that in opening the Bible
I may open my mind and my heart to your Word.
May your Word nourish me
as it nourished Jesus.

Teacher
God is with us when we read from the Bible.
We pray that God’s Word in the Bible will inspire us to live as Jesus asked.
We will now listen to God’s Word from the Bible.

Jesus said, ‘I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one
another. If you have love for one another, then everyone will know that you are my disciples.’ (John 13:34-35)

All
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Teacher
We ask God quietly in our own hearts to help us to live as Jesus has asked us to do in these words from the
Gospel.
All
Amen.
