linking this to religious sources (AT1 iii)
What is the Bible?

How to Read the Bible: What is the Bible? - Bing video

The word Bible means ‘book’ but it is actually a collection of different kinds of books by
different authors but it tells one story- the truth about God and his love for his people.
The Holy Spirit inspired the authors of this writing which is why the Church family believes
that the Holy Spirit is also the author of the Bible.
The Old Testament-
texts written before Jesus Christ was born and covering God’s dealings
with ancient Hebrew world and its people. We share this with the Jewish people.
The New Testament-
writing following the birth of Jesus and covering his life, teaching,
death and establishment of the Christian church.
Both Jewish and Christians treat Holy Scriptures with great respect and reverence because it
is the word of God. During Mass it is placed on a special lectern and at the end of the
reading the priest kisses the Scriptures.

Task 1: In your own words, ‘What is the Bible?’ you have 3
minutes!

Let’s look at the scripture!

Paul, in his letter to the people of Rome

who were suffering persecution for their faith,
explains how Scripture helps us.

Romans 15: 4-6 - meditate on the scripture thinking about what Paul
teach us about scripture and its impact?

Pick a phrase or line that speaks to
you, that you think is
 important to
remember.

Write the quote you picked in your book
with the scripture reference
.
Briefly answer these questions- you have 4
minutes.
AT1: Why did you pick that quote?
AT2: How does it change a Christian’s life?
Your Task Today…
Write a
‘code of respect’
for how people should treat the Bible giving
reasons for your ideas.
You must-
write at least 6 rules in your code of conduct.
You should-
explain all of your ideas with religious reasons.
You could-
link your ideas to the scripture we read today or other religious
sources you know.

We should respect the Bible as a tool for
learning because, as Paul teaches us in
Romans 15: 4-6, ‘what was written in the
past was written to teach us’. This means
that God is trying to teach us and give us
advice and we must listen.

Let’s end together in prayer.

Lord God, thank you that we can all come together to study your
Word today. As we study together today and each day, we ask that
you fill our minds with wisdom and fill our hearts with joy. May God
the Father prepare us for our journey, Jesus the Son guide our
footsteps and the Holy Spirit watch over us, on every path that we
follow be that at home or at school. We ask that you continue to
watch over us, our families, and friends at this difficult time and
keep us all safe so that we can be together again soon.

We ask Mary to intercede as we say;

Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus,
Holy Mary, mother of God,
Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
