Training Video 90ft Diamond Mechanics for Umpires
Training Video Observations Verbal calls are clear and loud enough to hear Verbal calls are accompanied with hand signals Brief pause before calls are made Communicate, Communicate, Communicate! Move yourself and get into the best position to make a call Any other observations you noticed?
Special positioning for base umpire on small diamonds These age divisions use small baseball diamonds: 9u 11u 12u On smaller baseball diamonds, the base umpire positions himself or herself behind the infielders because there is not enough room in front of the infielders
Plate Umpire Tips Slot position for right and left-handed batters Catchers moving and blocking your view
Guidelines, Tips, and Suggestions for Umpires Make sure games start and end on time Stick to the time limits specified in the rules Announce the start time of the game to both coaches after first pitch Announce to both coaches when it is the last inning, so everyone knows when the game is supposed to finish Review the age division rules before the game (posted on our website) Work hard and move around to get into appropriate position to make calls Do not stand still when you can get into a better position Watch the ball, batter, and base runners carefully in case your umping partner needs your help to make a call Check swings Fair/Foul ball Missed touching bases by runners Tag up plays
Ejections An ejection is when a player, coach, or spectator is removed from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct Situations that warrant immediate Ejection Inciting or participating in a fight Intentionally trying to harm another player (malicious contact) Physical contact with an umpire Threats or vulgar insults toward an umpire Obscene gestures Outrageous profanity Anyone ejected from the game must leave the vicinity of the playing field (including bleachers) for remainder of the game. Failure to do so within a short period of time will result in the offending team forfeiting the game Delayed Ejections (after a warning has been violated) Continued arguing of rules or a judgement call (balls and strikes, out or safe, etc) Light profanity If the situation causes you to fear for your safety, please call 911 Do your best to avoid ejecting anyone. It should happen very rarely.
Incident Reports Link to file an incident report: Report an Incident File an incident report (on our website) if there are any problems during your game and we will follow up with coaches, parents, or the league as appropriate Inappropriate behavior or conduct by player, coach, or fan that requires action If you were harassed or threatened If you were physically contacted If someone yelled at you with profanity If you need to eject a player, coach, or fan for any reason If there is a major injury during your game that required medical attention Ambulance, paramedics, etc
Poor weather situations It is the head Sparta coach s responsibility to make a Go/No-Go decision before the game begins if weather is poor It is the plate umpire s responsibility to make a postpone/cancel decision after the game has started Thunderstorm Lightning Hail Tornado Any weather scenario that causes game-play to become unsafe Postpone for 20 minutes if weather or field conditions do not improve, then cancel the game When in doubt, play it safe
