Practice empathy and compassion

To really understand how to respect other people, put
yourself in their shoes and attempt to truly understand
where they're coming from. You can be courteous to people
without really caring much about them, but true respect
stems from a sense of
empathy,
a deep sense of shared
understanding. Try to recognize the bonds that tie us all
together and the fact that we're all sharing the same earth.
Respecting each other is a way of getting along and making
the world liveable and more delightful for everyone.

WHAT IS EMPATHY?
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EMPATHY & SYMPATHY?

EMPATHY

EMPATHY is the ability to
understand and share the
feelings of another

SYMPATHY

SYMPATHY is having
feelings of pity or sorrow
for someone else's
misfortune – feeling sorry
for them

You can feel EMPATHY & SYMPATHY together or separately

RESPECTING OTHERS
EMPATHY

EMPATHY means being able to put yourself in someone else's shoes, being able
to imagine how they might feel in a situation and to understand how they feel
and why
Having EMPATHY or being able to EMPHATHISE with other people is a skill
which will help you to grow as a human being, to successfully communicate
with others and be able to handle lots of different and sometimes challenging
situations
EMPATHY is sometimes a difficult skill to develop, especially when you are
young – but if you
try hard
to imagine how something affects another, your
empathy will grow
EMPATHY is being able to understand others and share how they feel

want to be treated in a situation,
and make an effort to treat other
people that way.

visitors, staff, classmates, other
pupils and family members - with

RESPECT YOUR SURROUNDINGS

We all share the same planet, the same earth and we should all be doing our
best to make sure that it is a good place to be
This means being aware of our surroundings and behaving in a way that takes
into consideration those that will be here after us
Everyone likes to enter a well cared for and considered environment whether
it is outside or inside – make sure you RESPECT your surroundings at all times

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Don’t drop litter or leave litter or a mess behind when you leave
Do not abuse equipment/furniture/walls/materials or anything else
– this includes graffiti and deliberately breaking or marking
Remember to leave an area as you would like to find it – think how
you
 would feel!
