  2. How did we get here? Explosive growth in the field of Higher Education Case Management Creation of independent offices/departments with multiple staff persons Focus on specific areas of Student Conduct work A need to mitigate risky behavior and drive retention through our work

  3. Brief overview of transition at UK UNTIL 2011: Associate Dean of Students handles ALL Conduct cases and facilitates Behavioral Intervention Team (beginning 2008) Fall 2011: Students of Concern Case Manager position created/filled, ADS supervises CM and manages all conduct cases Summer/Fall 2013: Office of Student Conduct and Community of Concern created. Parallel offices reporting to ADS Summer 2016: Student Affairs re-org, CoC and OSC receive additional funding/positions, report directly to DoS.

  4. Our career trajectory Therese MPH CDC >> UK Emergency Management Hired as original SOC CM at UK Transition to Director Move from supervising one professional staff member to three. Dominick MA, Student Affairs GA, Fraternity and Sorority Life RD, Xavier University SRC, UK OSC Assistant Dir, UK OSC Director, UK OSC Lots of trainings . and a Ph.D. program From no professional supervision to three.

  6. How do I run this office New office. What do my people need? Manuals & Documents- Basic Expectations New and fresh, and sometimes uphill Careful negotiation, get feedback, check up the chain and down the chain When it is hard, reach towards mission and purpose. Know your why.

  7. Where did all my time go? Oh, Supervision! Hiring Process Structure Expectations Institutional Departmental Professional Development: Are you training up?

  8. What does this mean for my professional and personal relationships and work/life balance? CoC Clear boundaries for after hours contact Expectations to campus community re: office vs. individual Balance of leave time for yourself and all staff Friendly but NOT friends Be Elsa and Let if Go! Student Conduct Office of 1 person Ph.D., Supervision, and full-time case load Vacation, shutting off the email, and using partners to push responsibilities I learned to be honest, be upfront about challenges

  9. What does the future hold? Is Additional education necessary? What do you need to know? Theories (multidisciplinary) Specific professional training/experience? Where do you get it? What are the education benefits at your institution? Does that transfer to other institutions? What about a Doctorate? Consider your position, consider your responsibility Why do you want it? Career? Questions? Know your why and get it done

  10. Takeaways/Lessons Learned When you start, think about your vision and goals early. This should include your vision of who is on your team. Understand your purpose. Find a way to communicate expectations to your team, your close partners, and campus community. Use your background and continue to engage in reading and updates. This can help you find a way to manage decisions in your office. Consider your next steps immediately. Seek out information regarding your options of education.
