The LIFE AFTER SCHOOL TRANSITION COMMITTEE (L.A.S.T.) in Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows focuses on empowering youth as they transition from high school to the next phase of their lives. The committee collaborates with key stakeholders to increase employment opportunities for individuals with diverse abilities. Champion employers in the area support this initiative. Yearly events such as Transition Fair and Employer Appreciation are organized to provide information and resources, recognize supportive employers, and celebrate community inclusivity.

LIFE AFTER SCHOOL TRANSITION COMMITTEE (L.A.S.T.) is comprised of service providers in Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows, that empower youth as they transition from high school to the next phase of their life (work and/or post secondary training, etc.) KEY STAKEHOLDERS are: Community Living BC Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Community Services Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Parks & Leisure Services Ministry of Children & Family Development Ministry of Social Development & Social Innovation Pivot Point Family Growth Centre posAbilities Association of BC Ridge Meadows Association for Community Living Ridge Meadows Recycling Society School District 42 Work BC

  3. The overall unemployment rate in BC is currently 6.9%...for people with diverse abilities, it is between 72% & 80% ! this is not ok ! We exist to collaboratively inform the community and prospective employers of THE BUSINESS CASE FOR HIRING PEOPLE WITH DIVERSE ABILITIES, and to INCREASE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES for people with diverse abilities.

Yearly L.A.S.T. plans & participates in 3 key events: TRANSITION FAIR: an evening where families can access information & resources to assist them during transition and with day-to-day needs. 2016: TUESDAY APRIL 12THRotunda @ Thomas Haney Secondary School EMPLOYER APPRECIATION: in partnership with L.A.S.T., Rotary @ Work BC, and other community partners - Work BC will host a celebration/recognition of employers that have hired people with diverse abilities; perspectives are shared on the business benefits hiring persons with diverse abilities. 2016: SEPTEMBER (DATE TBA) The ACT Arts Centre & Theatre COMMUNITY LIVING MONTH CELEBRATION: a freeBBQ where the whole community can join in the celebration of what persons with disabilities bring to our community. 2016: WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 5THThe Greg Moore Youth Centre L.A.S.T. also produces (and updates yearly) a comprehensiveresource guide for persons with developmental disabilities; contact us for copies.
