  1. Introduction to Qualitative Research Junior Faculty Development Series QCOM, Department of Pediatrics Presented by: Aliyah Smith-Gomis, DrPH(c), MPH Manager of Research Operations and Faculty Development, QCOM

  2. Objectives 1. Examine the foundations of qualitative research design, data collection, and data analysis 2. Understand how to apply qualitative methods to your work at QCOM

  3. Introductions/Icebreaker Name Have you ever conducted qualitative research?

  4. Steps for Qualitative Research Design 1. Establish problem to be investigated 2. State the purpose of the study 3. Develop a conceptual/theoretical framework for the study 4. Formulate general/specific research questions Select a qualitative research design 5. Select a sampling strategy 6. Ensure reliability and validity 7. Determine data collection methods/tools 8. Establish how data will be managed and analyzed 9. Interpretation and discussion of findings 10.Prepare report!

  5. What is Qualitative Research? Qualitative research is a form of social inquiry that focuses on the way people interpret and make sense of their experiences and the world in which they live. A number of different approaches exist within the wider framework of this type of research, but most of these have the same aim: to understand the social reality of individuals, groups, and cultures. Researchers use qualitative approaches to explore the behavior, perspectives and experiences of the people they study. The basis of qualitative research lies in the interpretive approach to social reality. Holloway, 1997, p.2)

  6. Characteristics of Qualitative Research Asks why, how, and under what circumstance things occur Views social phenomena holistically Seeks depth of understanding Explores and discovers Interpretive & other open-ended Provides insight Iterative Emergent Defines the investigator as an instrument in the research process Involves respondents as active participants

  7. Types of Qualitative Research Case Study Ethnography Historical Analysis Phenomenology Content Analysis Grounded Theory Narrative Report Biography Action Research

  8. Naturalistic Non-manipulative, unobtrusive, and noncontrolling. More about Qual. Research Relies on personal contact over a period of time Inductive Less concerned with generalizability Provides deeper understanding of research problem and its unique context

  9. Qual vs. Quant (Theories & Approaches) Quantitative Begins with theory Examines hypothetical relationships Deductive Qualitative Builds theory Starts from observations and open questions to forming general conclusions Inductive

  10. Qual vs. Quant (Design & Data) Quantitative Research Produces hard, factual, reliable outcome Generalizable Large Samples Restricted design Most quantitative studies lack contextual detail and reflect a limited range of responses Qualitative methods Elicit rich Contextual data Small samples Flexible design

  11. Paradigms and Theories Paradigm A worldview that presents a definition of the social world linked to related sources of information (data) and appropriate ways (methods) to tap these sources Framework that influences how we perceive and understand the world. Theories Organize conclusions about the social world as they emerge from specific findings of scientific studies

  12. In conclusion, qual. research is systematic discover values natural settings can be expressed by words, images, and in numbers (sometimes) is flexible, emergent, and iterative is reflexivity

  13. Open Discussion Any qualitative research projects/ideas? Follow up with me!
