6 Internal Factors Affecting Fundraising
1. Capacity Fundraiser fatigue is real. Understaffing not only in fundraising, but across the organization Fundraising roles remain unfilled Many actively hiring for new posts because they are understaffed Unappreciated, overworked, or overburdened due to deliberate downsizing or attrition.
Quotes from Respondents We re a staff of 2 and often feel at capacity [We re a] small team wearing too many hats I am a one-horse operation at this time.
2. Board Support and Engagement It s difficult to get the board involved in fundraising. Board buy-in improving with increased awareness of potential impact Every year it s a grind to get them to engage Our Board s willingness to help with fundraising, which has been abysmal
Percent of board members made a gift to the organization. Percent of board members who supported fundraising activities. (e.g. host a dinner, meet with donor, make a presentation, etc.)
3. Leadership Work is needed to improve the philanthropic core of the organization Frequent change of leadership affects the organization s ability to fundraise was a recurring theme. Leadership stepping up to build relationships and supporting fundraising as a higher priority. Getting the new CEO and COO (on board) understanding the dynamics of fundraising. Both had limited experience with philanthropy.
Is philanthropy embedded in the core of the organization?
4. Strategy & Planning Despite optimism to achieve goals, many lack a plan Participants cited strong need for strategic plan. Better planning: not relying on building airplane while we are flying it. Takes dedicated time to prepare, review, ring out issues, and finalize Finally, we have agreement that there will be a formal planning process for next year.
