About Your Teacher Mike Glenn 20 years of teaching, mainly at-risk or special education students. 3RDyear at RHS. Responsibilities at Reno High School include teaching Transition ELA and Math, Directed Studies, and Freshman Seminar. Originally from Winnemucca, Nv., 2 daughters, both graduated from RHS. Hobbies include golf, powder snow skiing, and chukar hunting. Best thing about being a teacher? Freshman Seminar Overview This class is designed to help freshman successfully transition from middle school to high school. The focus of the class is based on 5 principles: 1. Building Relationships 2. Effective Communication 3. Organization 4. Academic Accountably 5. Developing Successful Study Skills
Weekly Activities (typical) Monday- Planner Day/Prepare for the Week/Goal Setting/Guided Study Tuesday- Guided Study/Team Building/SEL/Journal Writing Wednesday- Guided Study/Grade Check/Journal Writing Thursday- Guided Study/Grade Check/Journal Writing Friday-Team Building/Flex Day/Guided Study Freshman students are expected to come to class prepared for daily activities and become engaged in student practices that will help them in their classes and overall high school experience.
GRADING Each week is worth 50 points. Students will earn points for engaging and participating with the week s activities: planning their weeks assignments/tests/quizzes/projects/homework (organization), journal writing, guided study (which is linked to their core classes), and a weekly grade check. My hope is that each student will receive an A in this class. The rigor is not difficult and is up to each student to display respect, responsibility, and self-direction in laying a foundation for high school success. 50 pts. in any given week is the maximum point total. If your student is getting a point total of 45+ each week they are doing great. I have explained to each class that I don t frequently give 50 s, this allows for student s to always strive for improvement.
Transition English Transition English is for Special Education students in their 3rdand 4thyear of high school, (max. 2cr.). Students will review various skills needed centered around life skills; job readiness skills; rights and responsibilities; and use of technology. Other areas of focus are preparation for the workforce, workplace reading and writing, practical skills, and career planning.
Transition Math Transition Math is for Special Education students in their 3rdand 4thyear of high school, (max. 2cr.). This course is designed to cover consumer applications, including earning money, shopping and budgeting, banking, paying taxes, and career preparation. Topics will also focus on the world of work, including wages, benefits, human resources, operating expenses, insurance, business risks, and sales and marketing. Consumer math would be the best description of Transition Math.
Transitions Grading Each week is worth 50 points. Students will earn points for engaging and participating in class, and for hybrid students, completing and turning in work that is done on their home day. Due to the various amounts of support that students receive in the transition classes, mastery of skills is not required or expected. The amount of effort while exhibiting responsibility and improvement in each discipline will be weighed into student s weekly point total.
SSTS (Directed Studies) Student Success Transition Support, formally known as Directed Studies. SSTS is a support class for students who need guidance and direction with core subjects as well as a place to improve overall study skills, organization, and time management. Students earn weekly point totals (50 pts. possible) that are directly related to grades in other core class and using time wisely to complete assignments and self-advocating for assistance/support when needed.
