BACKGROUND SHS class during Fall 2017 = one session dedicated to covering Race, Ethnicity and the Biocultural One common reading: Racial Categories in Medical Practice: How Useful Are They? TED talk: How racism makes us sick
MORE BACKGROUND Feedback from SHS survey: General recommendation to improve and increase content around race I wish we had another session dedicated to talking about race to REALLY be able to talk about it
GOALS 1)Provide research-based evidence for a direct link between experiencing racism and higher disease rates / poor health outcomes 2)Provide evidence that racist beliefs are prevalent among health care providers and these contribute to lower quality care and poor health outcomes
RACISM AND DISEASE Coogan et al: Experiences of Racism and the Incidence of Adult-Onset Asthma in the Black Women s Health Study This is the study that found there was a positive association between racism and asthma Women who experienced either everyday racism or lifetime racism had higher rates of asthma incidence compared to those who experienced the least
RACISM AMONG MEDICAL PROVIDERS Hoffman et al: Racial bias in pain assessment and treatment recommendations, and false beliefs about biological differences between blacks and whites Focused on false beliefs about biological differences between blacks and whites White medical students and residents who held more false beliefs were more likely to rate black patients pain as less severe and recommend less accurate pain treatment
RACISM AND MATERNAL / INFANT MORTALITY Villarosa: Why America s Black Mothers and Babies Are in a Life-or-Death Crisis Negative health outcomes for black mothers is a serious issue in the United States, but we went through the reproductive block with no solid discussion on the topic Provides thorough history of research into this topic Personal narrative from woman whose pre-eclampsia symptoms were dismissed by her doctor, leading to miscarriage
CURRENT STATUS + NEXT STEPS Established better relationship with Dr. Estroff Article suggestions will be discussed at end-of-year SHS course director meeting Follow up about what decisions were made Continue discussion and possibly suggest discussion questions
