Overview
Mission
:
To ensure that servicemembers, veterans and their families are involved
in improving access to behavioral health services which are relevant to
military culture in collaboration with key provider organizations and other
stakeholders.
Vision
:
There is an expanded and identifiable network of service providers and
community supports to adequately meet the behavioral health care
needs of veterans, service members, and their families which includes
training provider staff about key elements of military culture and
organization as well as ongoing engagement of veterans, service
members and family members in eliminating barriers to treatment and in
creating flexible treatment and recovery options.
FY22 Year in Review
SMVF subcommittee has identified and completed 2 VSO Veterans
Suicide Prevention Training in Southeast Kansas and in Rural
Western Kansas
SMVF has continued to increase information and resources on Live
Connect Website and Face Book page
Increase SMVS subcommittee membership to include representation
from additional VSOs and State liaison to veteran organizations and
trainings
Governor’s PSA is still on hold
FY23 Goals
Reduce SMVF population lethal means suicide
Increase SMVF youth voice
Continue to identify all upcoming events, summits, conferences and trainings being
offered and placing on the Live Connected Website and Face Book page
Full review of Live Connected Website for needed changes and update resource
Continue to offer suicide prevention training to VSO, VFW and Legion members across
the state
Increase Knowledge and Partnership with all other State Subcommittees and reduce
    duplicated work
Resource Requests for Action
Funding request of $40,000 to fund lethal means suicide reduction campaign.
Funding request of $5,000 to continue training members of a VSO or VFW across Kansas
in Mental Health 1st Aid or QPR.

The Governor's Behavioral Health Services Planning Council SMVF Subcommittee's mission is to improve access to behavioral health services for servicemembers, veterans, and their families in collaboration with key provider organizations. Through initiatives like suicide prevention training and community engagement, they aim to address the unique needs of military populations. Looking ahead to FY23, the focus includes reducing lethal means suicide, enhancing youth engagement, and fostering partnerships with other state subcommittees. Resource requests for funding to support these goals have been made.
