FX-Audio DAC X6 Overview and Teardown Analysis

FX-Audio DAC X6

Tom Clark

Overview

Digital-to-analog converter with built-in amplifier
Meant for higher impedance headphones
In my case, my Drop K7XX headphones
Has three inputs: Optical, USB, and Digital Coax
Outputs to line-out RCA ports on the back as well
as to the headphones

X6 Teardown

Not much information available
Manufacture just has specifications but no parts list.
Found a teardown online (see picture)
VT1603 runs the USB interface and outputs the digital
signal to the CS8416
CS8416 MUXes the SPDIF, 1603, and coax digital
signals to a single serial audio which goes to the
CS4399
CS4399 acts as the primary DAC, taking the single
digital signal and outputting to analog
DAC output goes to OPA2134 for gaining
(potentiometer control) and filtering.
RCA outputs take from here.
OPA2134 goes to the 6120A which amplifies the
output for the headphones

Other information

From the TPA6120A2 datasheet:
This is an example setup using the amplifier
along with the OPA4134 Op-Amps for gaining
and filtering.
In the case of the X6, it is using the CS4399
for the DAC instead of the recommended
PCM1792 or DSD1792
The X6 also features a C1237 “speaker”
protection circuit
Power on delay of 3 seconds
Disconnection when power-off (stops pop)
Open protection for both positive and negative
offset voltage to headphones

FX-Audio DAC X6 is a digital-to-analog converter with a built-in amplifier designed for higher impedance headphones like the Drop K7XX. The device features multiple inputs including Optical, USB, and Digital Coax, with outputs to line-out RCA ports and headphones. A breakdown of the internal components reveals the use of VT1603 for USB interface, CS8416 for signal processing, CS4399 as the primary DAC, and OPA2134 for gain and filtering. The X6 also incorporates TPA6120A2 amplifier with OPA4134 Op-Amps for further enhancement. Additional features include a speaker protection circuit and power-on delay for safety.
