Year 1 Home learning English
A big hello from us! Hello to our lovely Year One children! Hope you re all keeping safe at home and are super busy and active! So now that you ve had some time at home we thought you would like some new activities to try. You can show your grown ups what super writers you all are! Note to parents In English we have recently completed a block of work on Non-Chronological reports. We talked about the main features as a class and did some shared writing. The children then planned and created their own reports on dinosaurs! As part of their home learning we would like them to complete another report which will help consolidate their skills. The slides can be used as a guide at home. Please do not feel that your child has to sit and write a whole page in a day! Take your time, research the topic and allow them to complete the report to their own ability. Encourage them to spell words for themselves and use their phonics if possible. I have included some phonic work mats for the children to refer to for spelling. Their work can be completed in their exercise books. Happy writing! Year 1
Non-chronological Report Think back a few weeks ago when you were in your Year 1 classroom! Do you remember learning about Non-Chronological reports? Look at the example We wrote our reports about Dinosaurs! We created our own dinosaurs and gave them a name! We talked in class about the features of a Non-Chronological text: Title Sub headings (diet, habitat) Picture with labels Fun fact or Did you know box.
Task To create a Non-Chronological Report for an animal of your choice. Monday Discuss at home what animals you like. Do you have a favourite animal? Or pet? Using your book, write some simple sentences about your favourite animal. What do you already know? Example Penguins are fast swimmers. Can you add a conjunction to improve your sentence? (and, but, because) Penguins have wings but they cannot fly. Key points for sentence writing: 1. Think it, say it, write it, read it. 2. Remember to start with a capital letter and end with a full stop. 3. Use your phonics to help you spell words. 4. Write on the line (ascenders and descenders)
Tuesday Begin to research another chosen animal at home. Use a page in your book and collect together your ideas. It may look something like this: Tigers are carnivores (eat meat) No two tigers have the same stripes. Look for information about Where they live (Habitat) Diet (what they eat) Interesting facts! Tigers are good swimmers They search for their food alone at night
Wednesday & Thursday Write your report Below is a template that we used when we wrote our own reports. You may wish to use that again!
Friday Tricky words! Practise reading and writing your tricky words: See Phonicsplay website. - Click on Parents section - Interactive resources - Tricky word trucks If you have problems viewing this game I have attached the Year 1 common exception words onto the next slide. Ask your child what teacher they have for phonics and then aim to read and spell the words in the appropriate box. Challenge: If you can spell these words have a go at putting them into sentences in your book!
