Beginning with setting descriptions, Year 5 English Home Learning for the week of 18.5.20 mirrors Math live lessons online. Each session includes quizzes, explanatory videos, activities, and post-lesson quizzes to gauge comprehension. Students are encouraged to share their final setting descriptions for feedback. Guidance on lesson activities, quizzes, and independent workbook tasks is provided, with additional extension activities for enhanced learning. Support and resources for selecting spellings are also included for a comprehensive learning experience.

Year 5 English Home Learning W.B: 18.5.20
Year 5 English Setting Description This week, your English learning is going to be very similar to the Maths live lessons you have been using online. Each lesson includes: an initial quiz, a video explaining your learning, an activity and then a quiz at the end of the lesson to check your understanding. The lessons should be easy to follow and the online teachers mark your answers with you. However, it would be great to read some of your final setting descriptions. Once you have completed these, please send them across to your class email or upload them on Teams to share your amazing effort!
If you still have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask any of your teachers using the class email address or Microsoft Teams. Helpful Hints Click on the relevant lessons from the PowerPoint slides. Click Start lesson . This will then take you to a quiz, complete the quiz. Once you have completed this initial assessment, click Close quiz. Then click Next Activity at the bottom right of the screen. This will take you to your lesson. Play and pause the lesson as you wish. If you need to come out of the lesson video, just click Close video and you can Resume video at any time. To complete the activity, Close video and go to Next Activity to find an activity to complete. These independent activities can be completed in your workbook.

Remember, this is optional but will help you develop your fact retrieval skills even further.
Lesson 1 - Clouds Choose 5 words from the Year 3 and 4 list that you find tricky and 5 from the end of today s online lesson. Moons Use the 8 words from the final part of the online lesson and you will be given time to practise these at the end of each lesson. Stars Use the 8 words from the online lesson and then use your reading book, a dictionary or words that interest you or choose another 7 words from the Oxford Owl spelling activity.
Lesson 2 - Spelling practise task For spellings this week, you can complete a spelling activity of your choice from the Oxford Owl website. https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/ Username: coundonyear5 Password: spellings Use the techniques suggested in Spellings Practise ideas to help you remember these spellings. Use this lesson to practise spelling your selected words. If you have chosen Moons, then they will test you on Friday as part of the lesson. If you have chosen Clouds, ask a parent or carer to test you on Friday. If you have chosen Stars, some of the words will be tested in the lesson and you may need a parent or carer to test you on the others. Good luck!
Lesson 3 KS: To identify the key features of a setting description Please see the next slide if you require extra information on each of these features. In this lesson, you will be looking at what features make a good setting description. There will be 4 main features that are discussed Parenthesis Prepositional language Hyphenated words Personification We have taught some of these skills already in school. We have spoken about parenthesis but not covered this in detail. Don t worry Lesson 4 goes into more detail about parenthesis and how we can use it effectively in our writing.

Once you have completed this online lesson, see the next slide for Extension activities. Lesson 4 KS: To use parenthesis effectively In this lesson, you will be learning how to use parenthesis to add detail to a sentence. You will be shown examples of parenthesis within a setting description and then asked to create your own sentences including parenthesis. This will be a great skill to learn, ready for when you write your own setting description in the next lesson.

You can use all of the skills you have learnt this week and other skills you have been taught this year to create a wonderfully descriptive setting description. Mr Emmerson (the online teacher) takes you step-by-step through each stage of planning and writing an effective setting description. We would love to read some of your setting descriptions. Please send them to your class email or upload them onto Microsoft Teams.
Spelling test time! Remember : Clouds - don t forget to ask somebody if they could test you on your spellings! Moons you should have done your test as part of the lesson.
