Who is God in the Bible Today we start a new series of teaching called the I AM -series on the claims of Jesus there are 9 of those claims in the New Testament the first one is: I AM the Bread of Life Bread was the main food in the human diet in the land where Jesus was born and was teaching
We will read and study from the Gospel of Jesus written by the Apostle John. Grab your Bible and open it at John, chapter 6. The chapter is subdivided in four parts: Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand 1. miracle Jesus Walks on the Water 2. miracle 3. Jesus the Bread of Life claim 4. Many Disciples Desert Jesus rejection
Parables and Metaphors A metaphor is a speech that uses an image or a tangible thing to represent a less tangible thing or some intangible quality or idea. A parable is a story, which illustrates an instructive principle, or lesson, or a normative principle. Jesus uses many parables in His teaching. Jesus uses many metaphors in His teaching. The metaphor I AM the Bread of Life is used by Jesus in a series of teachings, healings, and other events that took place around and on the Sea of Galilee.
Just before Jesus claim to be the bread of life, He physically fed many people, by miraculously multiplying 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes into enough food for 5,000 people (John 6:1-15). Remember how Jesus did the multiplying fish and bread (John 6:1-15) as we watched in the Jesus film? Let s watch again. The people were satisfied and wanted Him to become their . . . . . (John 6:15) king Then Jesus performed another miracle. The followers of Jesus were on the lake 5 km from the coastline when a wind storm appeared. They were terrified. Suddenly Jesus showed up walking on the waves and He said It s me, don t be afraid (John 6:16-24). These miracles were necessary as a preparation for the next truth claim to be understood.
Definition of Terms in John 6:25-51 Rabbi (verse 25): Wise teacher, a highly respectful title for someone with great teaching ability. Son of Man (verse 27): A term Jesus used to refer to Himself as being sent from God for the purpose of dying for the human race. The Father (verse 27): A term that Jesus frequently used to refer to God the Father. Manna (verse 31): A bread-like substance given to the Hebrew people to sustain them during their journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. When they were in the desert, manna came down from the sky like rain. Exodus 16:14 14 When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor. 14 Last Day (verse 40): The day Jesus Christ will return to earth. Flesh (verse 51): The physical body and physical life.

John 6:25-51 (NIV) Jesus the Bread of Life 25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, Rabbi, when did you get here? 26Jesus answered, Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval. 28Then they asked him, What must we do to do the works God requires? 29Jesus answered, The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent. 30So they asked him, What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? 31 Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat. 32Jesus said to them, Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. 34 Sir, they said, always give us this bread. 35Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . 37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40For my Father s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 41 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, I am the bread that came down from heaven. 42 They said, Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, I came down from heaven ? 43 Stop grumbling among yourselves, Jesus answered. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets: They will all be taught by God. Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. 46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47 Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. 50 But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Observation Questions John 6:25-51 1. According to Jesus, why was the crowd looking for Him? Enough food, v. 26 2. What did Jesus say was the most important activity (for those listening) to do? Was that really doing something, like working? Receive food that endures eternally, v. 27 3. In whom did Jesus ask people to believe? In the one God has sent: Jesus, v. 29 4. What did the crowd want Jesus to do before they would believe? Another miracle, v. 30 5. Did the crowd understand who had been the giver of manna in the desert? No they didn t understand. It wasn t Moses, but God the Father who had given the manna (true bread from heaven), v. 31-32 6. What is the difference between the manna in the desert and the bread from heaven ? Physical bread for the body vs. spiritual bread for the soul/spirit
Giving life to the world, v. 33 7. What did Jesus identify as His life s purpose? 8. What claims did Jesus make about Himself in relationship to God? He came down from heaven, sent by God, v. 33, 41 Not to do his own will, but to do the will of God, v. 38 9. What is the will of God the Father? That Jesus not loses anyone who has been given to Him, v. 39 That Jesus will give all who believe in Him eternal life, v. 40 That Jesus will raise up everyone at the last day, v. 40 10. Which argument do the people use to doubt about Jesus statement that He came from heaven? They knew Jesus earthly parents, v. 42 11. Which phrase indicates that Jesus cares about all people? Anyone who eats from this bread we live forever. Jesus is willing to die for them, v 51 12. In which ways did the people respond to Jesus claims? The followers said: Sir, from now on give us this bread , v. 34 The religious Jews grumbled, v. 41

What does this difference tell us about their different ideas on how to approach God? 17. What are your spiritual needs and are those needs met somehow?
