Dive into the world of 2D and 3D shapes with a focus on properties, edges, vertices, faces, and lines of symmetry. Discover how to draw nets for cubes and cuboids, identify shapes, name 3D shapes, and understand mathematical definitions. Engage in activities that challenge your knowledge of shapes and their characteristics. This resource is a valuable tool for learning about shapes and their properties.

  1. Description: swlogo 2D & 3D shapes: Properties of shapes edges, vertices, faces, lines of symmetry. Drawing nets of cubes and cuboids July 2021. Kindly contributed by Nicola Smith, Gloucestershire College. Search for Nicola on www.skillsworkshop.org Please refer to the download page for this resource on skillsworkshop for detailed curriculum links and related resources. https://www.skillsworkshop.org/resources/2d_and_3d_shapes_including_nets Adapted from a PPT by Fiona Plackett 2011: https://www.skillsworkshop.org/resources/properties_of_shapes This PPT includes animated sequences & other features and should be run full screen. It is designed so that it can be printed out as a workbook. Reformed Functional Maths curriculum links include: E2.19 Recognise and name 2-D and 3-D shapes including pentagons, hexagons, cylinders, cuboids, pyramids, spheres E2.20 Describe properties of common 2-D & 3-D shapes including nos. of sides, corners, edges, faces, angles & base E3.19 Sort 2-D and 3-D shapes using properties including lines of symmetry, length, right angles, angles including in rectangles and triangles L1.24 Draw 2D Shapes and demonstrate an understanding of line symmetry and knowledge of the relative size of angles L1.25 Interpret plans, elevations and nets of simple 3-D shapes

  3. Todays Learning Objectives: All: be able to identify properties of 2D and 3D shapes Most: Be able to draw accurate nets for cubes Some: Be able to draw accurate nets of other 3D shapes. Created by Nicky Smith

  4. Activity 12D Shapes Identify these shapes. How many sides, vertices and symmetry do they each have? Underneath each shape write the name and the number of edges and vertices. Then draw on all the lines of symmetry for that shape. Created by Nicky Smith

  5. Activity 2 Name the following 3D shapes. D A B C E F H Created by Nicky Smith

  6. Mathematical definitions Faces the individual surfaces of a 3D shape Vertex/vertices corners Edges an edge joins one corner with another Created by Nicky Smith

  7. Activity 3 Complete the table on the next page Key words: Face, Edge, Vertex Use the table on the next page to record how many faces, edges and vertices each 3D shape has. D A B C CUBE SPHERE CYLINDER CONE E F G H TRIANGULAR PRISM SQUARE-BASED PYRAMID TETRAHEDRON CUBOID Created by Nicky Smith

  8. Complete for Activity 3 3 D SHAPE FACES VERTICES/CORNERS EDGES Created by Nicky Smith

  9. Activity 4 NETS What is the net of a shape? A net is a pattern that you can cut and fold to make a model of a 3D shape. If you cut the shape above out and folded it along the lines, what 3D shape would you make? Created by Nicky Smith

  10. Activity 5:What 3-D shape would these nets make? A B C D Created by Nicky Smith
