  6. What are LINGUISTIC CODES? What are LINGUISTIC CODES? In media studies, students look at the words used in any media text. These words and the way they are used are called LINGUISTIC CODES, or CODES OF LANGUAGE. Why the focus on language? Why the focus on language? In adverts, HEADLINES, SLOGANS and COPY might be used to help represent something in a particular way because of the choice of words. In audiovisual texts, linguistic choices help to build representations and recognisable genres

  7. Identifying linguistic features Identifying linguistic features This is where you use your skills as an English student Look for: AFORREST Direct Address Puns/ Plays on words Short sentences A call to action Metaphors/ Similes Instructions/ Commands Informal/ Formal Humour

  8. Task Task Use your task sheet to identify any linguistic features you see being used. Annotate each advert. I will talk through each one as well CHALLENGE: can you say what the EFFECT of the feature would be on the audience?

  9. Writing it down This advert uses emotive language, direct address, alliteration and instruction. The emotive language is the word dangerous . This is a powerful word that makes the target audience feel worried. The direct address is the phrase your hands . The audience would feel that this was a problem that they personally had, increasing the anxiety about bacteria. The instruction is wash them with soap and water . This simple instruction offers a solution to the anxiety and so is very persuasive. The alliteration is keep bacteria at bay , which helps to make the message memorable for the audience and underlines the key point of the advert. The linguistic codes help to represent bacteria as something to be fearful of and something to get rid of. This type of language is often used in products for cleaning. The anxiety that the advert creates helps to create a need where there wasn t one before. This then creates bigger sales.
