Safeguarding Adolescents Leads Network Interactive learning activity: This case study was constructed by the Safeguarding Adolescents Network Check In 2 October 2020 and was based on a mix of our experiences working with young people You can build your own case study using the template for this

The Young People John / Sam SAM SAM JOHN JOHN 17 years old Non-binary Gypsy Roma Learning needs NEET Possession of bladed article Sam used to go to school with John 14 years old Male Mixed white/other Diagnosed ADHD + ASD At PRU Attendance 60% Recent stop and search (positive outcome) Knows Sam from when they used to be in school

  3. The Incident / concerns o John has 60 % school attendance o There are concerns about him going missing o John was found in a house across country but was released o Sam used to go to the same school as John but has since left o There are concerns that Sam could be grooming John

  4. The Backgrounds/ Families John 14 Sam - 17 o No contact with father gone back to o Semi- independent accommodation o Care experienced Albania o Step dad around too o Lives with mum and step sister (12) o Mum works a lot does shift work o Youngest sibling other siblings have left home o John seen as problem child o Other older siblings and step sister are high achievers

  5. The Peer Groups John Sam o Bit of a loner o Concerns around hanging around older o Keen to impress peers peers possibly being exploited o Tried cannabis a couple of times through o 17 year old peers use cannabis Sam and their friends (John not fully o Sam regularly invites John to their willing but due to peer perceptions) accommodation to hang out

School John Sam o PRU - 60% attendance o NEET o Mentoring sessions - Learning mentor o Didn t really get the support needed o Doesn t get on with many of the teachers when they were at school o Sam spotted outside PRU with two only a couple o John has a time out card for when he gets adults adults frustrated o Has a safe space to go to o Works better when on medication but prefers not to o Not engaging with CAMHS

  7. The Neighbourhood John + Sam They meet up when John bunks off school and Sam encourages John to bunk off. Regular hang outs include: o Vacant area behind shops in Walthamstow o St James area also o Known hot spots for gangs gathering o They often connect online possibly where grooming started

  8. The Interventions SAM JOHN Daily Risk Management (DRM) Meeting i2 Charts o YOS intervention for Mentoring Sam for bladed Exploitation Risk Panel (ERP) article: on a referral order Rescue & Response Information Sharing o Adolescent at Risk Spark 2 Life Worker MASH o Community mentor Trauma Informed Approach

  9. The Conclusion o John is now getting support o Sam is on police bail for an outstanding matter o Sam engaged with Streetbase / Spark 2 Life and was helped with accessing apprenticeship and mentoring
