The Florida Department of Transportation's Roadway Characteristics Inventory (RCI) has evolved significantly since its inception in 1975, transitioning from a hierarchical IMS mainframe database to a web-based DB2 relational database in 2004. The RCI system now incorporates features for both Planning, Maintenance, and Traffic Operations, allowing for better data management and budget allocation. The current focus includes expanding transportation modes to include Rail and Trails, with future plans to incorporate Airports, Seaports, and a Geospatial system for enhanced data collection and analysis. Despite some funding challenges, efforts are underway to support the RCI project's continued progress.
