Summer Term Week 2 Week Beginning 4.5.20 Creative Curriculum (Art, DT, Geography and History) Music, RE/PSHE, Science, PE
Our Timetable Some of the children may find it useful to have a bit of structure whilst we are in further lockdown. Here is our timetable to give you an idea of a normal week in Year One. Obviously, there is no need to stick religiously to it but it may be a useful guide.
Date and Weather I have included a date and weather page each day so that you can discuss these with your children. Make sure they get outside every day (even if only for a few minutes at different points of the day) to experience and talk about the weather and how it changes. It might be nice to create a weekly weather chart and add to it every day. It would also be a good idea to discuss things like: What day was it yesterday? What will the date tomorrow be? What are the days of the week? What day comes 2 days after ________? If it is April now, what is the next month? Your children would also benefit from a recap of months of the year and the seasons. Here are some links to some songs they could practise or just listen to a couple of times a week. Summer Term Topic: Flight (Art) Today we are going to look at the history of the Hot Air Balloon! Print out or draw a hot air balloon for your home learning book and create a colourful design for your very own balloon.
The Hot Air Balloon The hot air balloon was invented by Montgolfier brothers in 1783. It has become the oldest invention that can successfully take people into flight. The illustration on the right shows the first manned hot air balloon flight in Paris, 1783.

Science Look at this video of Hot Air Balloons Hot air balloon Discuss: The features of a hot air balloon. How do you think it works? Next, you will carry out a short scientific investigation to help you understand how hot air inflates a balloon. You will need a small plastic bottle, a balloon, ice water, hot water (half-and-half boiling water and hot tap water).
Science Inflating a balloon 1. Stretch the balloon over the opening of the bottle. 2. Set up a cold-water bath and a hot-water bath by pouring several inches of ice water into one tub and several inches of hot water in the second tub. 3. Encourage your child to feel both tubs and notice what they feel like. You can also use a thermometer to observe the differences between the two tubs. 4. Put the bottle in the hot-water bath and push it down so the water rises up around the sides of the bottle. See what happens! Repeat this procedure in the cold-water bath. *trouble shooting: If nothing happens, try adjusting the temperature of the water by adding either more ice or more boiling water.
Science Inflating a balloon During the investigation, discuss: What is inside of the bottle? Can the air escape? What happens to the air in the bottle when you put the bottle in hot/cold water? After experimenting a bit: How can you make the balloon blow up? Shrink? What do you predict will happen if we leave the bottle in the hot water for half an hour? Why?
Science Inflating a balloon Draw a picture in your home learning book of the bottle with the balloon on top in the cold water and another in the hot water. Try to label your diagram. Balloon Bottle Hot water Cold water When I put the bottle in the hot water, Underneath, write a sentence or two about what you observed when the bottle/balloon was in the cold water and what happened when it was put into the hot water.
Science Inflating a balloon What is happening (the science): When you stretch the balloon over the opening of the bottle, all of the air is trapped inside. Putting the bottle in hot water causes the air molecules inside to heat up and begin taking up more space, causing air to enter the balloon and inflate it. When you move the bottle into the cold water, the air molecules cool back down and take up less space.
