  3. Goal and participants Goal: to explore the possibilities to develop a co- operation model between Dutch and Iranian partners to support the Iranian dairy sector to produce high quality milk and feed in an efficient way. Partners on Dutch side:

  4. Activities Collecting data + fieldtrip to Iran with all partners: September 2016 Overall impression: professional farmers, sector with high ambitions e.g. to export.

  5. Iran: characteristics 78 million people Centrally led economy Avg income: 5.700 $ (comparable with Romania/Bulgaria) Warm and dry climate: avg rainfall 250 mm Agriculture: 21% of employment In general small scale farms Exporter for vegetables, fruits, nuts (pistachio, dates, apples) Importer for meat, grains, soy

  6. Main milk producing areas of Iran The provinces of East and West Azerbaijan and Ardebil in the Northwest Guilan and Mazandaran on the southern coast of the Caspian sea Tehran, Qazvin, Alborz Northern part of Khorasan province in the North East Isfahan , Fars and Kerman

Key issues and possible co-operation Quality assurance, quality standards and milk payment systems Dutch experience and technology desired to organise and implement with all relevant stakeholders to achieve a higher quality of consumer products. Feed availability and quality Dutch experience and technology desired to organise and implement independent assessment of feed quality and building trust in the chain. Water efficiency and feed production International experience in crop production and water efficiency on farm level needed. Elaborate knowledge on policy development on regional and national level. Education: both on operational level and on economics Need was mentioned by all farmers. Several had done a training in the Netherlands in the past.

Main results Network building: farmers, processor, Ministry, feed industry, advisory, breeding, trade partners Insight in characteristics of Iranian dairy sector Consortium partners willing to continue joint efforts to come to a dairy chain project to demonstrate in joint NL- IR project what the Dutch have to offer to meet Iranian needs Serious positive attitude of Iranian partners Group of intended new (SME-)partners to strengthen and enlarge Dutch consortium

Next steps for future project Identify extra partners on Iranian and Dutch side Organise a joint week in the Netherlands with all partners To show how the Dutch sector is working To jointly develop a project Joint project: Aiming for long term results and effects Starting with hands-on activities with farmers, processor and other stakeholders
