  4. EACH PRO DEBATER CHOOSES THE PRO CONTENTION THEY WANT TO DO Open up the Case Helper File on the Elementary Student Prep Page AND have your Script ready to fill out. We need a Pro Debater to do a Pro Contention on . . Equity Quality Learning Safety Who is doing which?

  5. NOWPREPARE YOUR PRO CONTENTION! USE YOUR SCRIPT AND INCLUDE Problem Topic Solves Problem Impact of the Problem Use Sources Use your own Reasons We will work to get our cases done! I am here to help you, and we are here to help each other!

  6. EACH CON DEBATER CHOOSES THE CON CONTENTION THEY WANT TO DO Open up the Case Helper File on the Elementary Student Prep Page AND have your Script ready to fill out. We need a Con Debater to do 1 Con Contention on . . Distraction Social Skills Cyber Bullying Who is doing which?

  7. NOWPREPARE YOUR CON CONTENTION! USE YOUR SCRIPT AND INCLUDE Current situation is okay/fine Topic Causes/Increases Problem Impact of the Problem Use Sources Use your own Reasons We will work to get our cases done! I am here to help you, and we are here to help each other!

  8. PRESENT YOUR CASES! FOLLOWED BY QUESTION AND ANSWER When you listen to your opposing debater write down their argument AND Be thinking of and write down questions . . . Where did you prove ____? Wouldn t your position cause ______(something good/bad)_______? If you argue this ____, doesn t that mean ____.

  9. PRESENT YOUR CASES 1.5 minute Cases Followed by 1 minute Question-Answer.

  10. NOW PREPARE RESPONSES! Today, you have 12 minutes.

  11. PREPARE GOOD RESPONSES! THE BEST WAY TO RESPOND TO MOST ARGUMENTS IS TO SAY THE OPPOSITE Cell Phones do NOT provide good research tools followed by reasons/evidence. YOU CAN ALSO POINT OUT A BETTER WAY . . . School laptops/tablets are better for research followed by reasons/evidence. YOU CAN ALSO MINIMIZE THE ARGUMENT Most kids mess around with their phones and they don t research nor learn on them followed by reasons/evidence.

  12. PRESENT RESPONSES! 1 minute Response Speeches.

  14. EXAMPLE DEFENDING . . . Remind the judge of your argument I SHOWED CELL PHONES ARE NEEDED IN EMERGENCIES Respond to their responses THEY SAID STUDENTS CAN TELL A TEACHER. BUT, WHAT IF A TEACHER ISN T THERE? WHAT IF THE EMERGENCY INVOLVES YOUR PARENT? STUDENTS NEED A PHONE! Show what is still true about your argument and why that matters. SO PHONES ARE STILL NEEDED FOR EMERGENCIES WHEN TEACHERS AREN T AVAILABLE.

EXAMPLE WEIGHING CONCISELY STATE YOUR BEST ARGUMENT(S) Our side showed cell phones distract and hurt education VERY CONCISELY STATE YOUR OPPONENT S BEST ARGUMENT(S) They argued emergency situations STATE WHY YOUR ARGUMENT(S) ARE STRONGER But there are other ways to solve emergency situations, they happen rarely, and cell phones distract and harm education very badly and that harm happens every single day. TIPS FOR SHOWING YOUR ARGUMENTS ARE STRONGER Your responses defeated their argument Your argument Matters more Your argument is More likely Your argument is Better supported
