Efficiency Reduces Costs We believe we are efficient. But .. Record keeping linked to capital investment Record keeping for Non record keeping Farmers More training in farm business analysis Opportunity cost of labour reduced close to zero Input Costs Local grasses By products Imported Grain Use Big Data Dairy Farming Example
Clarity in Policy Commercial agriculture more likely to compete (Pigs Poultry) Needs specific policy. Leave no one behind. Using agriculture as an important social support mechanism (40% of population) Particularly now during covid Which All agriculture moves to fewer larger more technically sophisticated and capitally intense farms.
Issues of Scale Most Now have some long- term leases (NALTA) important. Large investments need financing for low and slow returns Commercial Grazing enterprise need large land holdings Can we deny economies of scale (Policy) Big enough to allow a family to earn a complete income Access to land is sensitive and complicated Commercial Banks? TLTB CBUL
Disease Management Diseases Worms TB Mastitis Prevention is cheaper than cure. Must educate farmers Proper nutrition resolves so many disease issues Need Training Poor Must improve access to knowledge, vets and meds. Working to keep out exotic disease ASF F&M Newcastle understanding on the proper use of medication, Training
Farmers need a Coherent Voice Representation FCDCL. FMIB, Biosecurity (Disease initiatives & NARC) Government requested the private sector to form Associations for all farmers (FCLC) Hard for farmers to advocate down the value chain. Price takers International Cabinet endorsed Facilitation Committee for cross cutting government issues Advocacy. Dumping, Duty, Insurance, Contract Farming, Theft Must restart. Training
Cross Cutting Issues Gender Representation through Associations (Dairy, Coconut. Mushrooms) NARC An ongoing study Minimising damage to the Environment Management plans and monitoring Disasters Flood Cyclone Covid Prevention Insurance Biosecurity Imports Exports Disease
Markets and Competition We have thin markets We will never compete with cheap off cuts from large industries. We can improve quality to grow markets (Beef Sheep) There are regional export markets (MSG) but need Biosecurity pathways. Import substitution more likely than export (Costs & Biosecurity) These often set our prices. Need to be mindful of limitations of local pastures Duty protection
Product Quality Commercial sector quality Informal sector quality Suitable, and even preferred, in local market. International standard (Pigs Poultry Honey) (Sheep, Goats, Jungli Murgi) Most Farmers disconnected from quality issues, carcass confirmation, tenderness Some good processing plants Poultry, Milk, Pigs, but can t turn poor meat into quality meat. Most processors have established standards. Abattoirs fit for local consumption. Presentation of meat at Supermarkets very poor. Need in service butchers. And more training Very cost competitive but need an upgrade. Seldom a premium for quality NEED TO ENCOURAGE COMMERCIAL FARMING AT THE FRONTIER OF INTENSIFICATION
Farmer Relationship with the Market Middlemen are necessary to agglomerate production (Beef) Monopolies Duopolies cause distortions and need regulations. (Dairy, Poultry) Vertically integrated (Pigs Poultry) Magiti markets are efficient (Short value chain) but have limited scale, and do not drive efficiency Need for more farmers to understand market demands for quality. Commercialisation
