The Why Amplify guide For Bradford District and Craven
Why are we amplifying key dates of significance across Bradford district and Craven? We want to attract and get the best out of the people we work with and for. That s why organisations across Bradford District and Craven have agreed to collectively come together to amplify key dates of significance that mark our shared history, raise awareness of our continued fight for human rights and social justice and celebrate all that which makes us different. These dates aim to raise awareness, build compassion, empathy, connection and understanding, create respect for difference, where everyone feels they can be who they are. But this shouldn t be for one day, week or month but all year round and that s why this guide has been formulated. To get organisations thinking about what else they need to do to go further and deeper than events and communications.
Thank you for working with us to amplify key dates of significance that reflect and matter most to our people. Who is this guide for? LGBTQ+ History Month is here! LGBTQ+ History Month starts from the first and ends on the 28 of February. The 2024 theme is Medicine #UnderTheScope which celebrates LGBTQ+ peoples contribution to the field of Medicine and Healthcare both historically and today. In this section you will find: A personal message from Lorraine McDonnel, Chief Executive Officer for Bradford Council Key messages Useful resources Support Services
Lorraine O'Donnell Lorraine O'Donnell Chief Executive Officer Chief Executive Officer Bradford Council Bradford Council As a woman from a marginalised community in Northern Ireland I have faced numerous personal and professional barriers to achieving success and this is what drives me to provide allyship to others so that they can be themselves, be included and be able to flourish at work. LGBTQ+ month helps us to recognise the achievements of LGBTQ+ people and the progress that s been made. But it also serves to remind us that discrimination persists, and we must take the time to reflect on what more we need to do and the practical action we can take to do things differently.
Key Messages More about the month LGBTQ+ History Month is an annual celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual trans, and non- binary history, including the history of LGBTQ+ rights and related civil rights movements. In the UK it is celebrated in February each year, to coincide with the 2003 abolition of Section 28, which was a series of laws in Britain which prohibited homosexuality. https://lgbtplushistorymonth.co.uk/lgbt- history-month-2024/ In Bradford, we believe that everyone has the right to be safe, to be themselves, to be free to love who they want and to lead lives free from discrimination. Our mission is to make sure people feel that they belong and be open about their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics, at home, leisure or work without feeling threatened. We have made remarkable progress in education, in the workplace and in medicine and health. But we need to do more. Inequality continues to persist for those who identify as LGBTQ+ and even more so when people face additional barriers because of their background, ability, colour and religion. We cannot be complacent. The human rights of LGBTQ+ people are under continuing or renewed threat in many countries, many of whom take asylum or refuge in Bradford. As well as the rise of national anti-trans and anti-LGB sentiments. Facts and figures LGBTQ+ have had a long history of fighting for their rights, a key example is fighting for the right to have same sex marriages recognised. The results from the 2021 census show that 2.2% of the District s population aged 16 and over identified as Gay or Lesbian, Bisexual or as a Trans woman or Trans man.

Where does inequalities come into this? Health inequalities are unfair and avoidable differences in health across the population and between different groups within society. Living a healthy and happy life is something we all should experience. There are many people working hard in services, organisations, and teams across our district to reduce inequalities. Yet we know that we must do more. We owe it to all our communities to get this right.
Where does inequalities come into this? Themes of inequality run as a golden thread throughout this Amplify toolkit. By highlighting awareness days, days of significance and religious festivals we place a spotlight on issues and challenges groups of people continue to face while celebrating the diversity across our place through raising awareness. Inequalities can be complex and is intersectional, as we recognise the lived reality of people with multiple disadvantages. However, there are many things you can do to play a part in reducing inequalities across our district. Our Reducing Inequalities Alliance aims to support collective action to reduce inequalities in Bradford District and Craven.
