Goalie expectations Practices with Storm Goalie Coaches: Team Practice Expectations: We have 5 Storm Goalie Coaches (Jordan Narvey, Elizabeth Kubicek (Kubs), Rebecca Sonnek (Boomer), Mara McClain, Patrick Anderson (new))..David Cole has moved to Nashville They are paid coaches, so please leverage them in your practices (i.e. maximize their time) Goalie coaches are instructed to connect with teams at least 48 hours in advance to ensure the ice time isn t a scrimmage, the goalie(s) will be there, and location times are still accurate. We target getting 1-2 touches per month with very few teams receiving 3 (only due to shared practices or by mistake). Intent is to have all goalies get this benefit. EXPECTED format o 10-15 minutes Goalie coaches work with all goalies in neutral zone while skaters work in respective end zones o Then leverage them in your station work I.E.) give them a station with a goalie and shooters they will come up with a drill that is good for the goalies and skaters o If a shared practice communicate with the other team: have one team use the goalie coach in the middle 20 minutes and the other team in the last 20 minutes 5 SIMPLE ACTIONS FOR COACHES TO EXERCISE AS ADVOCATES FOR THEIR GOALIES 1. 2. 3. All teams must have a designated goalie coach Put the pegs in the net all the time. Modify drills to ensure goalies are included; simple tweaks to drills can make a huge difference. Use a marker on the ice: draw creases; bonus- label points 1,2,3,4,5 to assist with angles. Regularly (every practice) work on goalie skating (t-pushes, shuffles, butterfly slides, etc); frequently can be done at the start of practice when everyone else is doing skating drills o Also see a library of drills on the Storm Goalie Zone page 4. 5.
Goalie expectations (continued) Game rotations: EBUGs (Emergency Backup Goalies) At your level or lower (cannot be from a higher level or division i.e a PW A goalie cannot sub for a Ban B team) o Within your own association first o Within your district second Must wear his/her own jersey. Substituting cannot interfere with his/her own team activities and must follow the rest rules two hours from scheduled finish to start. Must have District Director approval (both districts if goalie is from outside D3) o Head Coach or Manager must submit the request submission form will be on coach page of D3 website. Substitute Goalies Squirt/10U o For the 2024-25 season, District 3 has determined that we will continue to prohibit the use of an EBUG for all squirt level and 10U teams. This will prohibit the use of an EBUG when a team s rostered goalie is unable to play. Each squirt or 10U team will be required to use a rostered skater to fill in for the rostered goalie who is unable to play during that game. o The squirt and 10U programs are designed for development of players, not for wins and losses. o Exceptions may be made with the approval of the District Director. o So make a plan now for how you are going to do this equipment and have a couple pre-determined players as the notice maybe/probably be short o Joel Laing (jlaing@mplshockey.com or 612-310-3984) will have an EBUG squirt/10U bag for distribution as needed USA Hockey recommends, and we support the concept of letting all kids play every day and it is unnecessary to have kids sit on the bench an entire game doing nothing. So, we highly discourage having a backup goalie ideal for an entire game. Two full time goalies: split games by switching at either the halfway mark of each period or halfway mark of the 2nd period. USA Hockey encourages even more frequent rotations, but we think that can be disruptive to the game flow and switching every 6 minutes is pretty frequent. One full-time goalie & one part-time goalie: Still rotate goalies in games even the part-time goalie is playing goal then when they play out, the full-time goalie plays the entire game. Two part-time goalies: play full games.

The foundation for hockey in Minnesota is the community association. Community association hockey makes hockey more affordable and accessible in Minnesota than anywhere else in North America. The most important part of community association hockey is the municipally owned rink and the VOLUNTEER COACH. Thank you!
