  2. Principle 1 Believe that people want to get better.

  3. Principle 2 Aim for about 90% of your talking to be questions. It s about asking questions.

  4. Principle 3 Tone is everything. Have a spirit of genuine curiosity. It must be genuine.

  5. TYPES OF SCENARIOS The other person has asked for a chat with you about something. You have asked them for a chat about something. It s a scheduled session for looking at their work. Note: Any of the above could be about something difficult .

  6. Question 1 OR Verbal handshake, then So, what s on your mind? So, what s happening for you with ?

  7. NOW Listen. Nod. Take notes. Ask for more. Don t give any solutions.

  8. Question 2 OR (in scheduled work chat) What for you is the biggest challenge in your role? What s the real challenge for you here?

  9. Question 3 Say it gently. If they say I don t know , ask the other question. What can you do about it? OR What are your options? Don t prompt.

  10. Question 4 You can use this one after any of the other questions. And what else? Try saying it more than once!

  11. Principle 4 Try to ask what questions.

  12. Question 5 This nails down the actions! When? Who?

  13. Question 6 Takes confidence! What was most useful for you?

  14. EXERCISE PRACTICING USING THE 6 QUESTIONS (AND 4 PRINCIPLES!) Say hello to the other person! Decide who is playing Line Manager first. Choose a realistic scenario. Try it out for x minutes with the Line Manager using the 6 questions. Then, swap over choose a different scenario.

  15. WHAT ABOUT DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS? Preparing for the conversation Having the conversation Get to the point quickly cheerfully and confidently! Focus on the facts. Use I statements. Properly listen to their viewpoint. Summarise and follow up quickly. What s the ideal outcome? What s an acceptable outcome? What might the other person be feeling? What assumptions are you making?
