SPORTS FOR DIFFERENT HEROES APOEL LEFKOTHEO 7/12/2019
EVENT PROGRAM The event took place on the 7/12/2019 from 9:00-12:20 at Lefkotheo stadium the official home of APOEL Basketball and Volleyball teams. From 9:00-9:45 PowerPoint presentation 9:45-9:55 Photoshoot 10:00-11:00 Basketball game 11:00-11:20 Intermission 11:20-12:20 Volleyball game 12:20-12:30 Medal ceremony
SPECIAL OLYMPICS PRESENTATION The presentation took place in the Lefkotheo video room in the beginning of the event. Mr. Costas Constantinou office director of Special Olympics Cyprus and Eleni Rosidou general secretary and national director of Special Olympics Cyprus informed APOEL athletes and officials about the following matters: The benefits of Sports for Special Olympics athletes. Improvement of physical state, development/display of courage and will power, development of friendships. History of Special Olympics Present of Special Olympics General facts about Special Olympics and the athletes Developmental Disabilities Myths/Facts
SPECIAL OLYMPICS PRESENTATION Models: Competitive Model/ Player development model/Recreation Model Special Olympics Cyprus: Departments/Programs/Structure/Participation Rights/Amount of athletes/Events Special Olympics Cyprus participated in/Available Sports (Team and Individual Sports) Criteria for athlete league placement Principal for meaningful involvement Explanation of rules and criteria for athletes to follow during the Basketball and Volleyball games Young Athletes program and Healthy Communities Project
PHOTOSHOOT Before the games started we took some photos with the athletes and officials of the event
BASKETBALL GAME First came the basketball game were both teams were comprised by APOEL and Special Olympics Athletes some officials from APOEL and the Special Olympics Committee APOEL Basketball team s assistant coach acted as the referee. Throughout the game changes of players were often to make sure all athletes were given satisfactory time of gameplay Music and Medical supervision was provided The guidelines of athlete etiquette during the games were all followed and we saw a strong comradery being build between APOEL athletes and Special Olympics Athletes.
INTERMISSION After the Basketball game a small intermission followed where sandwiches, water and juices were provided. The athletes and officials had some time to talk about the game and exchange pleasantries
VOLLEYBALL GAME The Volleyball game followed where both teams were again comprised by APOEL and Special Olympic Athletes some officials from APOEL and the Special Olympics Committee APOEL Volleyball team s manager acted as the referee Music and Medical supervision was provided Throughout the game player changes happened often to give everybody a satisfactory time of gameplay The guidelines of athlete etiquette during the games were all followed and many instances of lighthearted banter happened like the referee giving out yellow and red cards to APOEL players and Special Olympics officials
MEDAL CEREMONY Following the end of the Volleyball game a medal ceremony took place Panayiotis Panayiotou treasurer of APOEL awarded the athletes with medals for their efforts
CONCLUSION During this event we got to meet people who inspire and overcome daily and do it with a smile. All our athletes were happy and grateful that they participated and we were told that Special Olympics athletes felt the same way. We commend the officials of the Special Olympics Cyprus organization for the great work they do and the love and respect they show to their athletes.
