The Research Paper Guidelines and Timeline
In this research paper project, students are required to produce a minimum 2500-word paper supported by at least seven secondary sources with proper MLA citation. The paper carries a significant weight of 40% towards the course grade, with specific guidelines for each stage leading up to the final submission. The Research Paper Getting Started
The Research Paper Requirements At least 2500 words Supporting material from at least seven secondary sources, with proper MLA citation and documentation Use of only the sources indicated on the Research Paper assignment page
The Research Paper Good Things to Know The Research Paper counts as forty percent of the course grade. An F on the Research Paper means a D is the highest possible course grade. A D in ENG 1002 does not transfer.
The Research Paper Good Things to Know You have 38 days to work on the Research Paper (about five and a half weeks). We have weekly Research Paper assignments: an annotated bibliography, a topic proposal, a note-taking check, an outline, and a peer critique draft.
The Research Paper Stages of the Research Paper Completing each of the five stages of the Research Paper work is required. The Research Paper grade will be reduced by three percentage points for each assignment that is not submitted, is submitted late, or is far below the requirements for the assignment.

The Research Paper The Assignment Your Research Paper subject will be one of the following stories: James Baldwin s Sonny's Blues (66-93) Charlotte Perkins Gilman s The Yellow Wallpaper (316-30) Joyce Carol Oates Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? (94-108)
The Research Paper The Assignment Your Research Paper will analyze and interpret one of the stories, but will also examine the critical context, or the biographical context, or the historical and cultural contexts.
The Research Paper The Assignment The critical context How have scholars interpreted the story? What do you think are the most interesting or important aspects of the story? (This approach will examine the meaning of the story, with specifics from the story and information from sources to help you develop your ideas.)
The Research Paper The Assignment The biographical context How have the beliefs and the experiences of the author s life influenced the story? (This approach will examine how the author s life, work, and ideas have shaped the story or are reflected in it.)
The Research Paper The Assignment The historical and cultural contexts How does the story reflect or comment on historical or cultural circumstances? (This approach will examine the connections between the story and the context it was written in or that it depicts.)

The Research Paper The Story is your Subject Your Research Paper can go beyond the story, but the story is the subject of your paper. There should be many quotations from the story itself in your Research Paper. At least half of your sources should be secondary sources on the story itself (sources with the story as their subject).

The Research Paper The Annotated Bibliography For at least seven sources, the Annotated Bibliography will present the following information for each source: The Works Cited information A short paragraph-length summary of the source A couple of sentence explaining how the source might be useful in your paper
