What is the point? the solution space in the data domain is huge too much heterogeneity hampers interoperability, increases costs and prevents investments senior scientists and funders want a change How can we as RDA help changing? RDA has a good potential for taking action neutral technology independent platform cross-disciplinary global Inclusive!!! RDA is not alone So let s make use of it.
Many active groups RDA FAIR W3C IETF CODATA 60+ European Infrastructures G8 ? US OAI Infrastructures ? Asian Infrastructures ? Australian Infrastructures All contributing to principles, specifications, guidelines How to achieve momentum?
DFIG Suggestion for Progress 1. Downsizing the data challenges by defining BUNDLES 2. Aggregate all relevant assertions from different important initiatives 3. Identify overlap and agreements, find useful formulations, separate areas of disagreement 4. Build Charettes working on this 5. PID bundle to start Optimistic about agreement finding Assertions from RDA DFT: Basic Model RDA PIT: Unified Interface FAIR RDA DF debates DOI More to come (Thor project, etc.) Lots of agreements and overlap Recent PID workhop showed broad agreement as well Remaining: when Handles and when DOIs Need a stable worldwide system available for everyone
Summary PID Workshop Proper PID usage and support will become key for competitiveness in science and industry. PIDs need to be used by all parties dealing with data professionally to make full use of advanced opportunities. A PID centric approach to data management, access and use will open the way towards new and comprehensive way of data handling and finally to a global Digital Object Cloud as a generic, non-proprietary virtualisation layer. International and national steps need to be taken urgently to offer a sustainable, structured and mature PID service landscape based on quality assessed service providers to all interested parties. Only such a structured and massive approach will prevent ending up with unresolvable PID zombies. Etc.
