  1. Technology Transformation at the Census Bureau: Building a Data-Centric Ecosystem FedCASIC Conference, April 12, 2023

  2. Change is Here Today s panel is about the early steps in a new era for the Census Bureau. We'll discuss how we re modernizing data collection, storage, and processing capabilities and how the linking of survey, census, and third-party data will improve innovation and quality product creation for our stakeholders and the public. With this new work, the Census Bureau s focus as an agency will no longer be simply to field surveys and censuses and publish the results, but rather to shift to combining data-science with traditional survey methods, diversifying our data products and placing data at the center of our approach. 2

  3. Change is Here At the Census Bureau, the survey process is being modernized with an eye toward easing the burden on respondents. A key question guiding that effort, says Eloise Parker, assistant director for demographic programs, is: What are other ways that we can be producing statistics that aren t so wholly dependent on the household being gracious, cooperative and willing to basically give up their privacy on our behalf? The answer, in part, is third- party data. (From a recent article in Bloomberg News) 3

  4. CODE Functionality and Solutions Get Data DICE Provide a suite of standard, efficient, modern, cost-effective, and scalable data collection and data ingest solutions that can support the full spectrum of Census Bureau operations from the smallest survey to the Decennial Census Store and Compute Data EDL Provide a cloud-centric data storage and computing platform for survey operations, concurrent and research analytics, data processing, product creation, product innovation, and archiving Curate Data Frames Provide foundational datasets (related to geospatial locations, businesses, jobs, and people) that are linkable in nature, agile in structure, and accessible for production or research on a need-to-know basis Disseminate Data CEDSCI Disseminate our publicly available data products in a way that simplifies the means of data and metadata discovery and broadens the availability, utility, and ease of consumption for our data users 4
