2. Hot-air balloons were first used in Paris, France in 1783.

3. They were invented by two French brothers, Joseph and Jacques Montgolfer.

4. At first they sent up an empty balloon and basket.

5. Then they put a sheep,

6. Then they put a sheep, a rooster

7. Then they put a sheep, a rooster and a duck into the basket!

8. They flew for eight minutes.

9. It was watched by King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette. The animals came back safely! PHEW!!!

10. Next, two men travelled in the balloon.

11. Two years later, in 1785, Richard Crosbie made the first hot air balloon ride in Ireland.

12. Hot-air balloons are made of light but strong fabric. There is a basket with a large heater under the balloon.

13. The balloon must be filled with air and the air must be heated for the balloon to be able to lift off the ground. The air has to be kept warm or the balloon will fall.
