An Introduction to Christian key moral principles Over the last couple of lessons we have looked different models of the church the church as presented by the early Christians and the contemporary church. We have analysed what the purpose of the church should be to proclaim beliefs about Christ or to be a witness to Christ s love. The consensus is that the church should ideally combine to two . It is a sign and instrument of the Kingdom of God . This next section of the course is concentrating on models of humanity how should we behave and what should our responses to others be?

AO2 Evaluate the teaching to love your neighbour It is the most important principle It isn t the most important principle All Christians would agree it is important it is directly taught by Jesus. Love of neighbour comes second to love of God. That should be the Christian s ultimate priority. You can only love others when you truly love God and are in communion with him. This teaching is found in the Shema in the Old Testament it is such an important teaching that it was carried through from Judaism into Christianity. It is an impossible ideal and therefore cannot be the most important principle Christians cannot love all others we find it difficult to forgive the imperfections of others eg murderers. This teaching is also found in many other New Testament writings Paul picks it up as a centrally important teaching. Love for neighbour drives all other moral prinicples. Love of God and love of neighbour are inseparable and therefore it is impossible to say that one aspect is more important than the other. They are both equally important.
A regard for truth, the role of conscience and the need for forgiveness You have been given one of the key areas to read. You need to find an interesting way to summarise this teaching and be able to explain your area to other members of your group.
AO2 - God s behaviour is the only basis for morality God s behaviour is not the only basis for morality Yes God is perfect and as such we should follow his behaviour. In Exodus 34 God reveals himself to Moses as merciful and gracious. For Catholic Christians it is the behaviour of God and how it is interpreted by the Church which is of crucial importance. Yes God s behaviour can be seen in the 10 Commandments and these should be followed as they clearly reflect how God expects behaviour. The basis is not God s behaviour but the commands in and of themselves. Jesus command to love God and your neighbour Yes Jesus (incarnation) behaves in such a way that shows love to sinners and outcasts and as such we should follow that behaviour. Healing on the Sabbath Sermon on the Mount Forgiving on the cross We cannot say that God s behaviour is the only basis for morality, but rather it is all of revelation, church tradition and teaching and God s behaviour. God has shown anger and jealousy humans shouldn t use that as a basis for their morality.
