The film is from BBC Teach: My Life My Religion Getting ready Pupils: you will need a pen or pencil and some paper to record your answers. It is called Christian Prayer . In it, Christian children talk about how and why Christians pray As well as hearing views about prayer from the children, a Christian priest tells us about the Lord s Prayer and talks about Christian beliefs about prayer Click the link to the film from the BBC website, and then watch it carefully. TASKS for learning Through this work you will consider how and why Christians pray. You will learn about some examples of Christian prayer, including the Lord s Prayer. You will also be encouraged to think about your own views on prayer.
Task 1: Why do Christians pray? In the clip, we are told that Christians talk to God through prayer. Make a spider diagram, showing 5 or more reasons why Christians pray. Circle the reasons that were given in the clip. Reasons Christians pray What do you think of these reasons for praying? Pick two or three reasons and write some sentences sharing your ideas and opinions about these reasons. Do you think that praying is a good idea or not? Write a short paragraph- explain your reasons for your answer.
Task 2a: How do Christians pray? In the clip, we saw lots of ways in which Christians pray. What are your thoughts about these different ways of praying? Why do you think Christians might pray like this? Praying together with music, songs and evening dancing Praying quietly, by yourself, using your own words to talk to God Praying quietly by yourself, using a traditional prayer that you have learnt off by heart Reciting prayers with others in a church, but without music or dancing
Task 2b: How do Christians pray? Extend your thinking. Discuss these would you rather questions with your class or someone in your house: Would you rather . sing a prayer, say a prayer out loud or think a prayer in your head without speaking? speak to God or listen to God? pray every day, or never pray? be sure God hears your prayers, or be sure there is no God? Why? Or perhaps you wouldn t want to do any of these. Why not?
Task 2c: True or false? Using the information from the clip, say which of these statements are true and which are false: 1. Christians must pray alone, where it is quiet 2. Christians can only ask God to help other people, not themselves 3. Christians believe that if their prayers seem to be unanswered, then God wasn t listening properly 4. Jesus taught his followers a prayer that is still said today by Christians 5. Christians can talk to God in their own words they don t have to recite set prayers
Task 3: When prayer doesnt seem to work Tim has been working really hard to do better at Science at school. He s a Christian and wants to be a vet when he s older so he needs to do well at Science! He worked really hard to get a top grade in his last test and he prayed at church and at home every day for God s help and guidance. Tim finds science really hard and in spite of all of his efforts, he still didn t pass the test. He s feeling really upset and angry. He s going to talk to his priest, Reverend Jones, about it all tonight. Use the information from the clip, and your imagination, of course, to write a short script of the conversation (no more than one side of A4 paper) Tim has with Reverend Jones.
Task 4: The Lords Prayer The Lord s Prayer (sometimes called the Our Father) is the prayer Christians believe Jesus himself taught his followers when they asked him how they should prayer. It is in the Bible and you can read it here: Matthew 6:9-13 NIV - This, then, is how you should pray: - Bible Gateway It is the most popular and most widely recited Christian prayer ever and it sums up many important Christian beliefs. You can read more about this here: The Lord s Prayer RE:start (request.org.uk) Compose a prayer or a poem that sums up what important Christian beliefs and things Christians might ask God to help with in the world today. See if you can do this in no more than 12 lines.
