  5. Why should Christians be involved in the local community? 5 minute task check your learning after The teaching of Jesus, for example in the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats shows that Christians should not ignore the needs of society because showing agape is part of the Christians way of life. Agape is a Biblical word meaning selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love. Christians believe it is important to put their faith into action. They do this through many organisations and projects that help vulnerable people in the community. Street Pastors are an interdenominational network that began in South London in 2003. Street pastors are people who are trained to patrol the streets in urban areas. They do not have the power to enforce the law. The original focus was on gang culture and knife crime but nowadays they also help vulnerable people by providing a reassuring presence on the street including responding to drunkenness, anti social behaviour and fear of crime. They work closely with police and local councils. Their work includes listening to people s problems, giving guidance regarding agencies that might be able to help. They are backed up by prayer partners (Prayer Pastors) who pray for the Street Pastors and the work they are doing. Sometimes they communicate via mobile phone. A sister organisation was set up in 2011 called School Pastors, with the aim of reducing anti-social behaviour, illegal drug use and bullying. They will mentor young people and patrol within and around schools to prevent behaviour problems. The aim of Street Pastors is not to actively preach their faith but to make a positive contribution to society and follow the teaching of Love thy neighbour. agape, neighbour, problems, around, mobile, unconditional, drunkenness, patrol, preach, vulnerable, Parable, Goats, action, law,
