Bug or Insect Bites Bug or Insect Bites Bees, wasps, yellow jackets etc. Spiders Mosquitos Ticks Symptoms: Symptoms: Warm, red puffy skin; itching & minor pain are normal symptoms. If the person is having an allergic reaction, there may be hives, abnormal breathing & dizziness. First Aid: First Aid: - Apply anti-itch ointment/spray - If stung, can use baking soda & water paste - Monitor to see if symptoms worsen OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
Animal Bites Animal Bites Dogs Cats Snake Other wild animals Symptoms: Symptoms: May vary depending on type of bite First Aid: First Aid: - If bleeding is not heavy, wash the area with soap and warm water for five minutes - Dry with clean towel - Apply sterile dressing and bandage - Swelling can be minimized with ice/cold pack for 10 min. - Call 911 if bleeding is severe - Check with doctor to discuss the need of a tetanus or rabies shots. Poison Poison Swallowed: Nail polish Prescriptions/medications Gasoline Bleach Contact Poisons: Poison oak, sumac or ivy Symptoms: Symptoms: May vary depending on type- rash, vomiting, gagging, cramps, etc. First Aid: First Aid: - If swallowed, call 911 and be ready with the following: name of posion, age of person, symptoms, how much time since poison was swallowed For contact poisons: remove contaminated clothing - Wash all exposed areas - Apply calamine lotion OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
Burns Burns Stove Curling Iron Matches Fire Symptoms: Symptoms: First degree: red or discolored skin Second Degree: blisters and red skin Third Degree: white or charred skin First Aid: First Aid: - Remove clothing that comes off easily - Cover lightly with dry, sterile, non adhesive dressing or clean dry cloth OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
Cuts & Scrapes Cuts & Scrapes Slice: cut or laceration Rash-like: scrape or abrasion First Aid: First Aid: - Stop any bleeding by applying pressure and elevating area - Rinse with warm soapy water or antiseptic - Apply antibiotic ointment & bandage OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
Strain, Sprain & Bruises Strain, Sprain & Bruises Slice: cut or laceration Rash-like: scrape or abrasion First Aid: Remember R.I.C.E! First Aid: Remember R.I.C.E! - Rest- stop & rest the area - Ice- icing can reduce inflammation and pain. Do not put ice directly on skin. - Compress- wrap firmly with an elastic bandage - Elevate- raise the injured area above heart level. Elevating will keep swelling at bay *An X-Ray may be needed, speak to doctor OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
Nosebleeds Nosebleeds Caused by: - Blowing too hard, sneezing - Picking nose - Hard hit to the nose - Dry air in the house - Fever or cold First Aid: First Aid: Tilt head forward, grab tissue or cloth Pinch the lower, soft part of the nose between your thumb and finger and breathe through mouth Hold for 5-10 min If bleeding persists, call your doctor OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION
