What is the TPA TPA stands for the Teacher Performance Assessment It is a mandatory assessment that teacher candidates must pass in order to obtain a preliminary teaching credential The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) working with the Pearson Corporation developed and administer the test Teacher candidates will complete both cycles of the TPA during supervised student teaching (fieldwork) or internship
Which TPA Does CSUSB Use? CSUSB uses the California Teacher Performance Assessment (CalTPA) You must be enrolled in a program s TPA Mentoring Class Multiple Subjects EDMS 4110 Single Subjects ESEC 6034
What is the Cost of the CalTPA? The CalTPA has two cycles. o For each cycle you will have to register and pay $150.00. o The total cost to complete the CalTPA is $300.00 Payment must be made when you register for each cycle. If you do not pass a cycle and need to resubmit, each resubmission will cost $150.00

CalTPA Cycles Permission Slips All students in the class or period used for the CalTPA must have a signed permission slip to be filmed for the TPA. If a student does not have a permission slip, alternative work or assignments must be provided for those students, as they can neither be used in the videos nor their work used in the analysis. The CTC provides a permission slip for use that cannot be altered or edited. No other permission slips are allowed. TPA Mentors have these slips, and the slips are also posted on the CSUSB webpage https://www.csusb.edu/teacher-education/teacher- performance-assessment
What else can I use for Permission? If the placement school has already collected permissions slips from students, teacher candidates may obtain a letter on school letterhead from one of the school's administrators stating that the school has already collected and filed permission. o Teacher candidates may use this letter instead of collecting permission slips. Whether teacher candidates use the CTC Permission Slip or have a letter from the school administrator, teacher candidates must show proof of permission to the TPA Mentor by sending the proof via email to tpapermissionslip@csusb.edu. You cannot film without having permission slips or a letter.
How are the TPAs Scored? Once the cycle is submitted to Pearson, it takes three weeks for the scoring The results are returned to the teacher candidate Teacher candidates will receive the score via the Pearson account by 10:00 pm on the return day Teacher candidates will receive scores for each rubric If teacher candidates receive a Condition Code indicating a problem or error that made scoring the submission impossible, teacher candidates must resubmit after correcting the problem
TPA Waiver Academic Year 2021- 2022 CTC allowed a very limited waiver for the 2021-2022 academic year Only teacher candidates or interns whose school had closed due to COVID or is no longer teaching standard-based lessons were eligible for a waiver All teacher candidates and interns are expected to submit the TPA on the due date chosen by the higher education institution. Cycle 1 Cycle 1: Learning about Students and Instructional Planning o Teacher candidates select a class that includes three focus students as the subjects for the assessment Focus Student: an English Language Learner. World Languages students my substitute a Heritage Learner, a bilingual student, or a student with a language learning problem). The student can be a reclassified ELL provided the reclassification has occurred in the last three years. Focus Student 2: a student with Special Needs. The student must have an Individual Education Plan, be on a 504 plan or classified as a GATE Student. The student can also be in the process of being identified in one of these categories through testing. Focus Student 3: a student from an underrepresented population There are several options for this student including but not limited to children of divorce, foster children, homeless children, recent loss or illness in the family, or children not responding successfully to instruction. o Students must be in the same class and cannot be a collection of students from different classes or periods o
Cycle 1 Teacher candidates completing Cycle 1 are required to teach and film a one-day lesson with a class from start to finish. No two day or multiple day lessons should be used in Cycle 1. The lesson should be self-contained from start to finish in one class period. The lesson must show both teacher centered and student-centered instruction, so some form of group work is required during this lesson. The lesson should be filmed so that both the teacher and students are visible and interacting. If the lesson is being done in an online environment, student cameras should be on as avatars or pictures do not count as students being visible online. o
Cycle 1 Passing Score and Due Date TPA Cycle 1 is scored using eight rubrics. Teacher Candidates must receive a total score of 19 on the eight rubrics with only one rubric scored as a 1. Two rubrics with a score of 1 is viewed as failure even if the total is19 or better. o Cycle 1 of the TPA is due on Thursday, March 17, 2022, by 6:00 pm. Scores will post three weeks later on Thursday, April 7, 2022, by 10:00 pm. o
Cycle 2 Teacher Candidates use the same class or period that was used for Cycle 1 o If teacher candidates are unable to use the same class, the teacher candidates must make certain the class or period has the required focus students as Cycle 1. o Teacher candidates will also have to obtain new permission slips from the new class
Cycle 2 Cycle 2 requires teacher candidates to prepare a unit that includes several lessons that the candidate will use to assess the unit s learning goals of the unit. Unlike Cycle 1, for Cycle 2 filming will occur over several days Both students and the teacher candidate need to be visible in the videos. In the unit, teacher candidates teach one class devoted to the academic language of the unit and one class using educational technology tools that support learning the unit goals. The unit should include three types of assessments: o At least two informal assessments per lesson o One student self-assessment o One formal assessment that will be the subject of the analysis in Step 3 o
Cycle 2 Passing Score & Due Date TPA Cycle 2 is scored using nine rubrics. Student must receive a total score of 21 on the nine rubrics with only one rubric scored as a 1. Two rubrics that score a 1 of each is seen as a failure even if the total is 21 or better. o Cycle 2 of the TPA is due on Thursday May 19, 2022, by 6:00 pm. Teacher candidates receive scores three weeks later on Thursday, June 9, 2022, by 10:00 pm. o

TPA Contract CONTRACT FOR SUBMISSION OF CYCLES 1 AND 2 The following is a contract to be signed by student candidates for completion of Cycles 1 and 2 (This will be completed on the first night of the class): As a CSUSB Candidate in 4110, I will complete both Cycles 1 and 2 by the deadline. The Spring submission for Cycle 1 is May 17, 2022. Cycle 2 is due May 19, 2022.* If Cycles 1 and 2 are not submitted by the due date or extension*, I will receive NC for 4110/6034, and will be dropped from Student Teaching. How do I get Started? Ensure enrollment in a TPA Class Work with Resident Teacher and University Supervisor to identify the class or period to use and confirm that the class or period has all three required focus students. Identify when you can teach your unit for Cycle 2. Collect permission slips or your letter as soon as possible Sign the contract and return it to your TPA Mentor Do not wait to start working on the TPA. o On average you will spend 60-90 hours outside of class working on Cycle 1 and 90-130 hours on Cycle 2
